Wigan Mines

Started by: daniel (217)

Do any documents exist such as employee records etc. for Wigan Miners? I want to do some research on my Great Grandad, see where he worked etc. I watched the Mining Doc last night with ricky tomlinson and thought I heard him say that he was visiting the mining records office in Leigh?? Does anything exist at the History Shop? Also my Great Great Grandfather was an Employer at the coal mines with several staff living with him. Would any docs exist to find out where he worked and possible information about his life in the pit? Any help greatly appreciated.

Daniel,

If you contact leigh miners welfare in Leigh, they may help you.
All the records used to be kept at Anderton House in lowton.
That was untill bickershaw colliery closed in 1992.
I worked at bickershaw coll, And I have had trouble trying to find my records, Although if you are only looking for employment details you might have better luck. The records I was looking for was the various jobs I had underground. Your best bet is to get intouch with british coal who will have all the details from when it was the National Coal Board and before that...Good luck

Hi,

They have some books on mines at the History Shop (or did do), not been for ages.

I think that they are lists of injured and killed in the accidents though.

Worth a try, as the staff are very helpful in there.
