happy times was there from 1952 until i sat my 11 plus.

Used to go to sunday school at st johns,waking days o boy that seems like a life time ago

I went to st Johns I left in 1955, I remember tom worthington, he always had a smile on his face, he was a lovely man. I had forgotten about the field treats on the cricket field. What happy days they were.Jud, Ann derbyshire was in my class and her sister christinewas the hairdresser.did you know Carol Smallshaw, she lived on city rd. she was about my age.

names sound familiar dotty,and yes field treat days were happy.

dotty .carol smallshaw ,its a small world , when i met my husband in 1970 ,carol was his ex girlfriend .

I also have many happy memories of St John's, it seems that many of us have these memories. The fifties were great too for all us baby boomers.I am pleased everyone enjoyed those days...wherever in the world they now are.

I went to St John's in 1952 and St. Francis of Assisi sunday school kitt green, the cricket ground was behind. I was at school with Yvonne Foster my oldest and best friend we see each other regular she lives in winstanley I live in Euxton

I've looked at all photo's in early 50s and i do remeber most if not all their names although i don't recall wm.oaks,my school days were the best yrs of my life both at st.johns and pem sec.Didn't billy smith die quite young,good looking lad dark hair dark eyes

Billy Oakes was in my class at Pem Sec, and I think it must be about twenty years since Billy Smith died

was that the billy smith who had the knickname smyte

I don't remember him being called smyte, Dotty, he used to live in the council houses in Fleet street, just to the left of where the path came from Saddleback.

dodger Billy Smith was nicknamed smyte when he was was at school, i do not know if it stuck with him in later life.

I don't remember that Fordie, I was in the same class as Billy and never called him smyte.

Nice to see your postings. I remember Yvonne Foster. Her mother had the little grocers shop on Fleet St near the top of Lamberhead Rd, didn't she. I used to go fishing with Roy Markland, if it's the same one. We went to Ireland in about 1960. I have photos with him in them, from that trip. marky, are you related to Terry Berry from Norley,across from the Green? Or is my memory fading..

dodger you must have been a close neighbour of mine billy lived in the last council house next to the ginnel that lead onto saddleback crescent going down into saddleback rd. Yvonne's mum had a toffee shop and yes it was at the top of lamberhead green more or less back to back with st. john's school,me and yvonne have been close friends for 50yrs going on holidays together with our families as they were growing up and still going on holiday together now that our families have families of their own, no fred i'm not related to terry berry my married name is berry i married a chorley lad 44yrs ago and have lived in euxton all my married life

Fred, hope you are well, was terry berry married to sheila willis. I remember the little shop on the corner of lamberhead rd, Jessie,s.I remeber the big potato scales in the corner,and going in with my mum with ration books.
I went to st johns churchyard recently and I came across the grave of Billy Colqune (hope that is the right spelling)
I didnt know he had died, do you remember him Fred, he lived further down saddleback from you.

I remember Billy Colqhoun, he lived in the house on the corner of the Green.

i went to st johns late 50s, our teacher was mr king,our head master mr starkie, i was in the choir,i lived in lamberhead rd,eddy foster lived near me he had a sister yvonne but i dont think they had a shop,i remember billy smith, i remember carol ashcroft in my class she lived at the top of church street....

not the same yvonne , builder, yvonne was an only child and moved from the shop to the bottom of saddleback rd, the houses on the path leading to the brookehouse pub and city rd. from there she moved with her parents to eton place kit green near the old engine pub then to winstanley when she married,jimmy shaepherd lived on that same path leading to the brookehouse but on the opposite side,he wasn't directly on saddle back rd, his house was a corner one joined to bernice ashworth i think

Terry Berry did marry .Sheila Willis ..they used to have the Ben Jonson pub at goose green..not seen him for ages last time i saw him he was not so good ..

I sat next to eileen bennet on our first day at school, were you in that class ? I do remember the glass cases with the stuffed birds,frightened me to death.

No blog I'm afraid,just read yours though, you are 7 months younger than me, so maybe in a class lower. I'm in the 49/50 school photo, directly behind muriel fishwick, with joan penk to the right.The only name that I remember from your part of pem was clarissa lancaster. After leaving st.johns we went to live in upholland so I didn't see anyone again,happy memories though.

Just read your comments,yours at the bottom mine at the top! I do remember Rita but I was friends with Joan. I couldn't understand why I wasn't on the earlier photo,but realised that for some reason I was in mr. Starkys class for either 2 years or 2 terms, could have been an age thing.Your name isn't familiar to me, but we knew a lot of the same children,Sheila B lived in the same street. Pity it wasn't the same class, most people who have been to st.johns and post on here seem to be younger than me,although Tony Berry put the photos on I havn't seen anything from him. I do remember him well, he was always the cleverest lad in the class.

ecmdi, the carol ashcroft I knew was an only chid born 1946, the lived I think on arnold place norley hall, her dad was a japanese prisoner of war, from st. johns she went to pem sec. A very pretty blonde haired girl,nice natured too,I vaguelly remember the name joan penks but I think she was quite a bit older than me

I went to Highfield sec mod , i had mixed times there mainly good one's but sat 11 plus at ST James CE poolstock near Bold Pub , i was off sick when class sat it , so i had to go to Old Grammar school to do it with others from all over Wigan who had missed it first time ..
What annoys me to this day ( 74now ) was that i was told the pass level score was 108 points .. The letter my late parents showed me was i scored 107 and a half , therefore failed !! at the time i was gutted ,and to be honest it did bother me for some years ...i often wonder what if ? just another half point would my life been any different ??
