I'm sure you're not oblate Jo anne. 
The oblateness is because of the earth's rotation. A point on the equator is spinning at over 1000 mph.

It is an oblate spheroid. My error. As I said I hadn't Googled it and obviously got my oblate confused with my oblique. My apologies. I shall wear my dunces cap (yet again).
