Motorbike shop at saddle

Started by: comfortably numb (40)

During a conversation the other day about motorbikes for some reason , I came up with " oh there was a motorbike shop at the saddle called......" then my memory totally failed. Was it Millers or am I totally wrong.

Yes, I seem remember a motorbike shop at the Saddle junction. I can't remember what it was called, I think it was Mullers, or Mallies, or something like that.
I think they sold scooters and stuff and they had another one at Orrell Post called 'Rotordean Kawasaki Centre (Haydock)'. Or maybe it was called Tom Hall's, I don't know!

Millers at Newtown
Tom Hall at Newtown
Rogersons at Orrell Post

They sold Jap bikes, Suzys, Yams and Hondas, but if you wanted a Kwack, you had to go to Bolton or Chorley to Doug Hacking motorcycle shop

Tonker

Mick Grant ?

That name sounds familiar

Mick Miller was indeed the boss of Millers motorcycles in the mid to late 70's and he was by all accounts a bit of a bar steward, cos a mate of mine worked at Millers then, in fact me mate worked there until it closed and then he went on to the buses, which is where he still is today ...

I think Mick Miller moved to Spain and drunk himself to death ...

If I am wrong then I apologise

Bill Pope had a motor bike shop in Haydock in the Rams Head area he had an early Douglas Dragonfly in the window with horisontal cylinders, from the 20s i think.

Hey, I was going to mention that! It wasn't near the Ram, it was at t'other eeeend, opposite the Huntsman!

I remember it being full, literally stacked up with old motorbikes, most in pieces. Frames, wheels, engines, exhausts, everything. You couldn't move in there!

Just think how much that junk would bring today?

It's a pair o'semis now.

Do you remember that bloke who used to work (?) () in the power-house with Roy Fairhurst? His name was Kenny Mills and he kept racehorsedogs? Well, he used to have a shop near the Ram. I think that might have been Popes at one time, but I don't know. I'll have to ask my mate, Tommy, he'll know, because he has a 1961 Bonneville and is a Yicker!

They did too! They sponsored a lad on a Kawasaaaaarki KH400 in the Kawasaaaarki 400 series. Or it might've been the Avon production series, I don't know, but they did anyway. I can't remember his name.

Speaking of Rogersons, I'll find a photo and post it, see if you notice anything!

Bentlegs - did there used to be a motorbike shop in Haydock called "Harry Penketh's"? That would be in the 60's and might be the shop that changed into Pope's?

Pope's Motorcycles, Church Road, Haydock !

Yes. Neil Hanson. A name from the past. He was either the rider of the Kawasaki 250, or he worked in the Haydock shop.
I can't make my mind up.
