Sue

Clematis flower on the new growth from last year

so if you prune them you will be stopping them from flowering

usually only prune if they have got out of hand by growing to tall ect

try training them horizontaly to keep the flowers low

good luck for next year

Early flowering clematis will flower on new growth from the following year, the rest can be cut back hard.
What feed are you using Sue? I think a general Tomato feed is pretty good, if there is plenty new leaf growth the plant is obviously healthy.
Good luck

make sure the root section is always covered.i.e...where the plant enters the soil, hide that section from direct light.

It may be a late flowering clematis so wait untill end of July to see what happens,Early flowering ones should be cut down to about 10" from the ground in march, late one should not be touched,

I have three clematis out in a sunny position and they are flowering like mad. I don't cut them back at all, and I don't give them any feed.

Just guess I've got green fingers.
