This was a classic match played in brilliant sunshine. Wigan made the first score in the 7th minute when hooker Jack Blan went over after a powerful burst. Wigan continued to apply the pressure and in the 19th minute New Zealander Nordgren went half the lenth of the field to make it 6-0. As the first half progressed Billy Stott began to inspire Trinity, he was tackled by the last defender after making an interception before finally scoring following an exchange of passes with winger Ron Rylance. A penalty by Stott brought Trinity to within one point at half time.
A great tackle by Wigan fullback Cunliffe on Wakefield player-coach Jim Croston prevented an early try with Trinity on top but in the 50th minute Wigan winger Stan Jolley pounced on a dropped pass and raced 70 yards to score in the corner. The two sides exchanged blows as both Stott and Nordgren scored their second tries, the latter following a superb break by Cunliffe. With nine minutes to go Croston got through a gap to make it 12-11, Stott missed the vital conversion.. Then with 90 seconds remaining Wigan were penalised for obstruction and Stott sent the difficult kick between the posts to take the lead for the first time. Even then the excitement wasn't over, Wigan were awarded a penalty five yards inside their own half, Nordgren took the kick but it fell short to make it seven misses from seven attempts.

There was a record number Of Wiganers on that tour.If they had flown out ,they would have had a full team on the field.
They went over by ship ,they did this to give other Teams a chance.Even with a
reserve team they still got to Wembley.

I'D LIKE TO PUT ONE COMMENT TO YOU ABOUT THE MATCH REPORT,JACKIE BLAN WORE THE No13 SHIRT THAT DAY I DON'T THINK HE EVER PLAYED HOOKER,AND I HAVE SEEN A PHOTO OF HIM GOING OVER FOR HIS TRY,THE REASON I'M SURE ABOUT THIS IS BECAUSE HE WAS MY WIFE'S UNCLE,AND HE SHOWED US ALL HIS MEMORABILIA(IS THAT SPELT REET)

Kenny,Just had a look on the Warriors site,and he's down as Hooker.Not sure if he played at 13 on the day,but they would know him as the hooker and just wrote it.

No mate, this was my time for rugby league.I loved it then,i couldn't tell you who played for Wigan now i just don't bother any more.Still got me rattle though,did you used to close your bedroom curtains when Wigan lost, i did.

NO I WASN'T THAT BAD,BUT THAT 66 FINAL WAS MY FIRST TASTE OF CUP FINAL R L WHAT A DISASTER,I WENT THERE WITH MY BROTHER AND HIS MATES,I WAS ONLY 11 AT THE TIME,AND I THINK IT WAS ANOTHER 12 MONTHS BEFORE I SAW WIGAN BEAT SAINTS,AS A KID I THOUGHT IT WAS OUT OF THIS WORLD,AND I WAS ACTUALLY THERE TO WITNESS IT,GREAT TIMES
