Telephone con artist?

Started by: dave© (3507)

I had a phone call from 07052 100406 earlier on today, the phone rang only briefly, not allowing me very much time to answer it. At first glance, this looks like it could be a mobile telephone number - but it isn't I'm assuming the brief ring, was an attempt by them to get me to call them back @49p/m. It didn't work.

Here you go Dave©, I'll re-iterate for you -

"On a recent project I managed, I had the chance to chat to chaps who design software for phones.

I'm told that software exists, on servers, that just dials a number, starting at 00000 000001, and clicks through one digit at a time (ie 00000 000002, 00000 000003 etc) redialing each time. If someone answers, the machine hangs up, but logs the call number as 'active'. This number can then be used by tele-sales companies, or, sold, along with others, to tele-sales companies

Being ex-directory is no defence.....Ah, what wonders this modern world has produced"

Same scam with mobile phones, if you hit the return call button you get some scam artist that will pass you on and on to different people in the meantime you are being charged top rates like a 1900 number to talk to someone you don't even want to. If you don't recognise the number on your mobile just SMS them "Who are you?" If it is somebody that really needs to speak to you they will call again or text you a reply.
