St Nathaniels Cof E school P/B closed yesterday..

Very sad day for all of us, I personally was in tears (but wasn't alone in this!!)at the commemorative service in the church in the morning.
My husband and his sisters went to the school and I've been taking my children there for 10 yrs,so all in all there's been little sherringtons there for 30 yrs plus! So there's a lot of happy memories.
Was just wondering if anyone went and if they have anything they remember to share?

Hello the sherringtons I started at St. Nats. infant school in 1944 when I was 4 and a half yrs. old My first teacher was Miss Hindley, Miss Dean, H/mistress was Miss Molyneux. I then went into the juniors situated on the bend opposite Moss Lane, and then to Moss Lane Sec. Mod.H/master at the juniors was Harry Hurst (knobby) as we called him, Mr. Devenport was also there, Moss Lane head was Teddy Rimmer, and can name nearly all the teachers there. The one thing I DO remember vividly is that there was NO answering back, and no talking, the cane was used liberally, and DID NO HARM. The Vicar at St. Nats. church was the REv. Arthur Dean a truly wonderful man happy days at St. Nats. All the best two zero

Miss Dean was at the Church service in the morning, she was asked to recollect a little and they couldn't shut her up Wow i'm amazed at your ability to remember the names I was at school in the 70's and can't remember any!
Thankyou for sharing that, it is such a shame we have to lose yet another church school but hey ho must move with the times I suppose.

I started St. Nats in 1979 and Miss Dean was the headmistress then! I think she must have retired in the earlie eighties though, but having just joined Wiganworld i was surprised to read that she is still with us, don't really know how old she will be but she is one of my very first memories of starting school in 1979 and was a very nice lady. I think Mr McKay became the headmaster when we moved into the new building across the road from the old St. Nats which became the parish centre and boys brigade before it was demolished and houses built. Does anyone remember Mr McKay, Miss Foster, or the dreaded Mr Jones? he was frightening back then, a real Maths fanatic.

I only found this site yeserday and was browsing today and foud this news. SO I just had to reply and signed in.
My cousin taught at St. Nathanials for 40 yrs.
It was her first teaching job just pre war and she retired after 40 yrs. She was Miss Clara Smith and wwhen married Mrs. Ashton. She dued a few years ago. Her children are Pauline and John.
For a few years I was Head of Primcess Street Nursery School, Hindley and they were the happiest of all my teaching years

Hello Betty, i think your cousin may have finished at St. Nathaniels when i started in 1979 but the school secretary was a Dorothy Greenwood when i was there, also she is my Mums cousin, i was just wondering if she was any relation to you.

Sorry. not related. Clara Ashton's parents had a hardware shop in PB.
Mother was a stalwart at Church all her life.
This has brought back family memories.

Along with St Nathaniels closing was Low Hall County primary which also closed at the end of the school year. Now this was my primary school and I must admit that I had to go and have a look before it's doors were locked.
