SMELLIES

Started by: mollie m (8763)

What’s your favourite perfume/aftershave/smelly? I’ve had lots of favourites in my lifetime, and many are now unfortunately obsolete, so what is, or was, yours?

In the mid-60s, as a teenager, mine was Evening in Paris. It was sold in Woolworth’s in a cobalt blue bottle for 1/11d (10p now).

It was discontinued at the end of the 1960s, but resurrected in the 90s by Chanel under the name of Soir de Paris (Evening in Paris), which would now cost me £70! How times (and costs) have changed).

Later, I went on to Estee Lauder smellies, but can’t afford those any longer.

Why don't you just have a bloody good wash?

I do, at least once a week, whether I need it or not, and I like a nice smelly to go with it.

You strike me as a Tweed lady Mollie?

Tweed? I don't believe I've ever smelled that one, Rio. My favourites by Estee Lauder were Cinnabar and Azure, but they're way out of my pocket range nowadays.

On the cheaper end I like Charlie and Anais Anais, but even they're pricy these days as well.

My favourite aftershave was/is Old Spice aftershave, but I don't shave as much these days!

Yvonne liked Chanel No5 and the last bottle of perfume I bought her was Daisy.

Old Spice might be the one used by some of the musclebound women seen on the programme Gladiators!

Whatever it is my neighbour uses to shampoo her dog with. A chocolate brown spaniel.named Jasper. The smell lingers wherever he goes indoors.

Channel no.5 is my favourite but at Christmas someone gave me a bottle of perfume..it’s produced by a firm named ‘Eden’ who are vegan and they replicate any of your favourite perfumes at a knock down price..of course I was given one that was exactly the same smell of Channel..but it turned out I was allergic to it? and finished up getting cream from the docs to stop the itching..apart from that in my youth it had to be Evening in Paris..from Woolies..it was a beautiful smell..

In the 1970s I like Tom used to smear Brut on meself, to attract a woman, it was actually Brut33 and it had been gifted to meself in a Christmas deodorant set, by someone who thought that I could smell better, it had the perfume like bottle, a roll on and foot powder, and I thought that Brut smelled like cat pee, it really did, so how you attract a woman is to smear cat pee on yourself

But at the time this caused a few laughs and that was the shape of the roll on, I mean look at it.

It's shaped like whatcha ma call it, one of them things what woman use, they put batteries in it, and it sounds like an electric shaver (how do I know that) it was rude.

Funny you should say that Owd Lad. Old Spice was originally blended for women and was sold as such. Although not musclebound myself, I've been known to pinch a bit off my late husband in the past.

Momac:

Evening in Paris was indeed beautiful, and I like Chanel No 5 as well. I still have a bit left, and that will be the end when I use it as it's too expensive for me as well now.

As for soaps, I use bottles of Imperial Leather with various fragrances, my favourite being Love Hearts.

mollie m..some months ago I looked through Amazon for Evening in Paris, but it cost a fortune for the empty bottles they were selling..I’ve never tried the fragrant soaps but will have a toot at those..I just love nice smells.

Momac if you read my very first post, I mention what happened to Evening in Paris. It was taken over by Chanel and renamed Soir de Paris (which is French for Evening in Paris) and it now costs £70 plus.

As for the bottles of Imperial Leather fragrant soaps, they're not easy to come by for some reason. The first ones I saw were in Lidl at £1 per bottle, but it was just a one-off. Then I saw some again at Manor Pharmacy at Boston House so I bought a few there but again, never to be seen again since.

I don't go in there every week but my meds are due to be delivered on Tuesday. Instead, I'll cancel and go get my meds on Wednesday so I'll have a look there. Will let you know if they have any.

2 things. Back in the late 70's / early 80's, someone I know had a company selling those fake / copy perfumes using network marketing. It was called Shirley May Perfumes. I think he sold that part of the company, but a friend of mine, Wigan Mick's neighbour, still has the head company which sells tyres. Perfume to Tyres in 40 years!
Second thing, I knew the girl on the Old Spice advert in the 70's. I've got a picture of her somewhere in a tent.

Mmm, deeelish! Rubber smelling perfume.

And what were you up to in a tent with the Old Spice girl? Hmm, hmm? That's like when Andy Pandy, Teddy and Looby Loo were put in a little box together. Hmm?

Er ..... better not answer that!

Plenty of smellies around the town centre these days and they are not on sale in the shops!

And that's no lie OC. There are so many scruffy, dirty looking men and women about around town these days. They seem to have no self respect whatsoever. And the language you hear is unbelievable.

Yes, well, this was about the sort of smellies that ladies like to dab behind their ears, as do the men.

The very first bottle of perfume my husband to be bought for me was Je Reviens by Worth. My word, it smelled gorgeous. It was in a 30 ml fluted blue bottle with a silver top.

The very first smellie I bought, was out of my very first wage packet, was from the cosmetic counter in Woolworths, was called The Blue Nile. No idea who made it but it was all I could afford. Because of the name I thought it was very exotic. I told my eldest brother this and all he said was "Smells more toxic to me" I was gutted. I did go up in the world of smellies though. Tried quite a few of the more fashionable ones of the times. My favourite ones now are by a now deceased designer, who's company is still very much alive and kicking. The original one was just named after him. Oscar de la Renta. There are many more different fragrances by his company.
I don't think he's that well known here but he's in other countries. My daughter, who lives in Australia, sent me two bottles over as a Christmas present. Very nice they are too. And they are definitely not toxic

I asked a question

'Is perfume made out of cat pee' ?

answer ....

"No, perfume is definitely not made out of cat pee! However, I can see where the confusion might come from. Some perfumes contain a synthetic version of a compound called "civetone," which historically was derived from the glands of civet cats—not house cats and definitely not their urine. Civetone has a musky smell and was valued in perfumery for its ability to enhance fragrances.
Nowadays, most civetone used in perfumes is created synthetically to avoid animal cruelty. Rest assured, perfumes are a blend of carefully crafted ingredients designed to smell divine—not feline!

There's nothing worse than sitting on the aeroplane next to a fat woman with strong perfume on. Trapped and gassed! It's a fate worse than death!!
