They are closing 200 pubs per day in UK...!! Up here we have lost 7 pubs in the last 20yrs...Is it a government master plan....is it greedy breweries....is it people can buy ale more cheaply elsewhere ?....where is it going to end...you lose a bit of your local community after every closure.... I like a pint as good as the next mon...but..my local Bispham Club..Billinge higher end...£3.65 for a pint of strongbow.,Aldi's own Taurus £1.99 for two litres...I support my local club...but at th'end of the day....it'll spend anywhere.. what thinketh the people of WW..? Thankyou.

you have added two zeros on too many BB - its 2 a day!!

''The number of pubs in England and Wales that shut their doors for good rose sharply in the first half of 2023, prompting warnings to the government that planned rises in business rates could force further closures in the beleaguered sector.

Figures show that 383 pubs, or more than two a day, “vanished” in the first six months of this year, almost matching the total for the whole of 2022, when 386 were lost.

The data, from the commercial real estate analysts Altus Group, measures the number of pubs that have closed down permanently because they have either been demolished or converted for use as homes or offices''

In the club two 330ml bottles of 0% lager £3-60 .At home a 660ml bottle of 5% lager £1-99 to £2-40 no brainer There is a repeat on the Tv(Where the heart is)which shows the drink culture of the time. They finished work then straight to the pub for a drink or two. Now most people commute to work and the last thing on their mind is going for an expensive pint or risking drinking and driving

A pub has a bar. There are many 'bars' opened recently in town centres. Different style than the old British 'public house', more continental, but they are selling ale just the same.

And they are much smaller, with a lot lower running costs, and they sell decent ale, which some of them are brewing themselves in micro breweries

there are many old shops now turned into ' bars' for the discerning beer drinker, No TV's, no entertainment, no food, just ' real ale' bars and they are doing well, When pubs started allowing kids in and encouraging shoppers in with food and coffee, the beer drinkers left, Men go into pubs to drink beer, get away from kids and talk bollicks, That type of pub, sorry 'Bar' is on the increase,

Tommy, they ain't necessarily small. In my neck of the woods, we have some massive examples, and they are often full to the gunwales, sardine-like packed.

Karaoke and quiz nights is the reason myself and my one-time fellow drinkers stopped using our local. It became no longer a venue where a handful of buddies could spend an hour or two just chewing the fat over a drink.

“They are closing 200 pubs per day”

1400 a week?
5600 a month?
67000 a year?

At that rate every one in the country will be shut within 10 months!

And you say it’s us who are thick !!!

Pubs are closing because unlike the past, people now have a different lifestyle than their parents which has included multi channel television with drinking and takeaways at home, going out for a meal at one of the many English and Foreign owned restaurants, many of which were drinking pubs, higher costs of watching live sporting events, owning their own houses and driving larger cars, second homes, foreign holidays, etc, etc

Not to mention the higher cost of living and ripping off by companies!

Then there is Weatherspoons with their cheaper prices for both food and drink which has also killed off many nearby pubs.

Things ain't what they used to be on the local pub and club scene!

Sorry...bit of a trigger finger moment Wigvet.....there's nowt nicer than being out on the bike and calling at a remote hostelry in the middle of nowhere to enjoy a pint....don't care for these micro brewery/trendy bar places.

Nothing like havin a chinwag in a local hostelry. I call in the Raven two or three times a week, not the cheapest boozer in Wigan but you don't have to queue and hope you'll get served like you do in the Moon!

Why refurb an old fashioned pub just to attract weekend quaffers? As for the chef, not been the same since covid struck?
