Started by: GOLDEN BEAR (6569)

Who the hell does this guy think he is ? sticking his beek into something that he has nowt to do with ,claiming that it is wrong to treat these immigrants the way Suella Braverman wants to do ! I would say to the venerable guy why doesn't he open up ALL HIS EMPTY CHURCHES THEN AND STICK THAT LOT IN THERE ??? We have a situation in Britain where all these NON-ELECTED MONEY TAKERS are interferrng in the ELECTED political system ,Has he forgot those nearly 800 so-called Lords /Lady's Baron's etc are not ELECTED BY THE PEOPLE OF THIS GREAT COUNTRY ,yet they can hold sway on Policy making issues , IF ever a politician wanted my vote he/she would have to vote for the disillusion of the House of Lords, for you WHUPS thats a vote worth doing !!! The sooner the planes start to take off for RWANDA the better just stop the waffle and get on with it ! G.B.

"why doesn't he open up ALL HIS EMPTY CHURCHES THEN AND STICK THAT LOT IN THERE ???"

I imagine most wouldn't be happy spending time in a church, which is alien to their religion. The complaints would be rolling in.

I agree, his job is to minster to folk who want ministering too, not shout his mouth off about politics in an unelected chamber, displaying the very essence of being 'privileged' and saying that I thought he did well as yon mon in't coronation, who presided over everything, and now he's blotted his copy book

The Archbishop and indeed all the leaders of the Christian Churches should be more concerned about the decline in the number of churchgoers and the way that many of their churches are becoming Weatherspoon pubs!

There is a former church in Earlstown, which is a Wetherspoon's pub, the Nine Arches LINK

like it or not but that is the job of the house of lords to debate checking and challenging the work of the government. If not you would have a dictatorship!!! So yes the Archbishop did have the right as a member of the lords to hold the government to account....

But our House of Lords, unlike the upper houses of other democracies, people who are not elected but selected!

And there lies the problem, having senile old people, a archbishop, a children's television presenter etc throwing back decisions of duly elected members of the house of commons.

Something not quite right in our parliament!

UK political parties produce a manifesto to put to the electorate before a general election. The party elected to govern have a mandate to carry out their manifesto. The House of Lords are supposed to accept that a manifesto pledge entitles the
government to implement it.

The Salisbury Convention ensures that Government Bills, included in the manifesto, can get through the Lords when the Government of the day has no majority in the Lords.

The Archbishop has just had to fork out £510 in fines and costs for speeding.

No, his job is to minister to the House of Lords, nit make political statements, a former MP who has had a distinguished political career and who knows something about politics, and is then is awarded a peerage, and becomes a member of the House of Lords, then it is they who can make political statements, not a jumped up vicar, taking advantage of his position

Not sure that Lords Spiritual would agree with your specification of their role in the upper house.
