Radio

I was a radio 2 listener for many years , In my opinion it has got worse recently and the leaving of Ken Bruce has forced me to look further a field,
Smooth FM is to my liking but, The adverts and the fact they play the same records day in day out is not what I'm after,
So,,,,,,, can anyone recommend a station with some chat, jokes, current affairs and music of varied and interesting era's without any adverts,

Mike Sweeney on radio Manchester has a very wide range of topics and music. On the air between 10 am and 2pm.

I moved to Greatest Hits a couple of weeks ago, I prefer it to Radio 2 and Ken Bruce is bringing his Pop quiz with him, there are adverts on but they are local, and the records are excellent.

Had same issue with Radio4.

Used to be a regular listener.

They dumbed it down so much, I just found myself opting out of listening.

I listen to the radio on my Smart Arse Speaker

I find that Radio 2 is now crap.

Greatest Hits Radio, say they only play music from the 1970s, 80s and 90s, which is wrong, because the play stuff from the 1960s too.

Gold, is a proper oldies station, with mainly music from the 1960s and 70s.

I'm not a lover of Mike Sweeney but I used to listen to Jimmy Wag and his Brother in Law on Sundays ( forgot his name ) , I'll give that Greatest hits a listening to and I think I'll treat myself to a Dab radio and maybe a bluetooth speaker, Thanks to all for your suggestions,

If you want a good laugh, Nick Abbot on LBC has a brilliant show on Friday and Saturday nights from 10pm until 1pm, he sometimes does other nights as well but is more serious when he does that. Friday and Saturday are very entertaining. I find Greatest hits radio station (the one Ken Bruce has joined) to be very good for music with far more variety than played on smooth, although they do also play adverts.

So in my search for a decent radio station I can list what I don't like,
1. Adverts
2. presenters that want you, ( the listener) to phone in
3. promises of big money win by entering a contest
4., futebaw chat,
5. political talk,
6, cooking recipes

I'm thinking Bentlegs has the answer , put Alexa on and when you need to jump channels , let her know,

up to now BBC radio 6 is winning but its early days, Although I do like Ken Bruce , I'm not a fan of popmaster so, I'd rate that as , ' one year out '

I used to have the car radio set to Wish FM but for a few years now I have it tuned to Smooth. The problem with all the local radio stations is you can set your watch to the tunes being played or singers like Otis Reading Lou Armstrong or the Carpenters who get played every day

People who refuse to pay the BBC licence fee are maybe not helping the cause.
And the people who do pay it suffer the same cutbacks.
It's unfair

I pay the licence and think its worthwhile, BBC is far better than watching adverts, Its the envy of the free World, American and Canada TV is awful , they have ads in-between the adverts,

Any road today I listened BBC radio Lancaster, I found it good and it will be on my shortlist for my
'out with 2 come in new' , project , for 2023.

Although I'll still have Paul Gambocheeny at 1 till 3 on Saturday , Pick of the pops,,,,

I listen to Smooth FM on my car radio but, unfortunately, the radio is tuned into WISH FM which, to me, is awful.

One day I had Smooth playing in my car and I tried to swipe a bit of dust off the display panel, only for it to change channel to one called Magic FM. It was lovely, and played most soul music of the 60s; but I changed the channel back when I stopped the car and worked out how to.

I hate radio stations with presenters who prefer their own voices and do nothing but yap about nowt.

Tomplum

I was reading this today LINK

So if yoo don't mind me asking, 'which way did you go' bearing in mind that you said.

"So in my search for a decent radio station I can list what I don't like,

"

I did listen to Vernon for a while because, he is from Bowton but, Sadly Did't take to him, I'm still struggling to find a decent channel, There seem to be a lot of women with ' screamy' voices who like to use the same words over and over, Very boring,
Example, " we're going to play the Stones new realise and its a really really good tune, Its a b s o l u t l y really really good, " and then they ask listeners to phone in about their day, That is cheating, they are asking the listener to entertain others and, I'm thinking, What are they paying you for, So I'm still program hopping and sometimes.dont even bother turning on the radio

I suppose it depends on what yoo like, and if you have got a clever speaker, because DAB only has a certain amount of radio stations on it, but I listen to 'Gold', and sometimes 'Greatest Hits Radio', to Ken Bruce actually, but they hammer their cash give away competition, and they do have quite a few adverts, but with the presenters they have on there, they have to make their money up somewhere, but if I am in a 'Rock' mood, then there is 'Virgin Radio Anthems' which can be good, but is also can be crap.

I remember Radio Caroline, and for years I listened to Radio Luxembourg

Radio has gone to the dogs, a few yearsago icouldn.t wait for Billy Butler and Wally on radio Merseside when they had hold your plumbs on . It was ilerious Then Amon and Jimmy Wagg came on radio Manchester and now they have gone,so we just ask ALEXs to play what we fancy.

yes Amon and Jimmy Wagg were a good team and did a brill show on Sunday on Radio Manc. Another Bad move for me is Radio 2 shifted Paul Gambochini off, pick of the pops and replaced him with Steve Wright on Saturday 1pm to 3pm. I'm tempted now to join the ever increasing people who don't pay the BBC licence , The BBC was the best broadcaster in the World but, now its dropping down the ratings IMHO

Ken Bruce is now on Greatest Hits Radio, just up the dial from Classic FM on 102.4 fm, in the same time slot he had on Radio 2.
