No wonder he ignores them, they crave his every word and long for banter from him,
does that hit base with any of you ?

BB: You just missed the Falklands War, did you see it coming?
Can you morse in Albanian?
I notice there's only one life belt on there as well, I suggest you check everything before you set sail.
Replied: 19th Aug 2022 at 14:23
Platty.... was two years later... morse is universal... mainly english language used.... but I do suppose foreigners can jibber to each other in their own tongue.
Replied: 20th Aug 2022 at 13:31
Thanks Arfur... just awaiting my draft papers to come through then I will pack my kit bag. I do like a tot now and again... Pussers rum by far the best... have you some onboard ?
Replied: 20th Aug 2022 at 13:34

rum
Replied: 20th Aug 2022 at 14:24

B.B I worked with a guy who was a radio operator in the Merchant Navy. He told me that he could be in the next room playing cards with his mates with the Radio switched on If someone messaged his code name in Morse,, it was just like someone shouting his name. He heard it whilst engrossed in his bridge game. Must say I was impressed.
How long did it take you to learn Morse?
Replied: 20th Aug 2022 at 17:13
BB: You are right, but I was thinking the people you will be taxiing will be Albanians. They probably all speak English anyway.
Lots of nice new doctors, teachers, scientists, murderers, car washers, rapists, groomers, thieves to welcome.
So, have you checked for the second life belt and the Aldis Lamp?
I'd also have a look at the galley down below and see if there are a rack of oars sticking out the sides with a whip at the front and seats with chains in rows.
My dad was a communication officer in WW2, he taught us children morse code. It was fun.

Morse is still used for signalling with an Aldis lamp when vessels are maintaining radio silence.
The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) officially replaced the Morse system. The frequencies which were specified for emergency/distress signals are no longer monitored. So, RN and US no longer teach Morse code for radio coms.
Some aviation beacons identify themselves in Morse, so aviators, at least have to recognise such signatures.
Cavers still use Morse. Radio frequencies used for coms do not significantly penetrate the ground, and the environment does not favour use of electronics. But banging a hand held rock against the strata can be detected at a considerable distance, and with practice, a rapid double tap will smudge into a more prolonged sound by the perceiver, hence simulating a dash. So Morse it is, and no equipment needed.

Is achievable at around 2-3 months. at sea I was operating at 25-30 WPM on the minesweepers. Yes Platty it is possible to cock one ear to the set whilst doing something else

When I was a LOT younger I was thinking at one time of learning Morse code But then there were no online courses. Probably if there had been Internet back then I would have given it a try . When you hear Morse code being used in films can you decipher it?

Ham Radio operators were required to pass a Morse Code proficiency test to acquire their 'Amateur Licence' . Countries have been progressively dropping this requirement. You could not learn it online, as WWW had not yet been created, but you could find evening classes for Hams to pass their exams for licence.
Replied: 21st Aug 2022 at 13:33
Admin.... you are never to old to learn.... you never forget it.. about 15yrs ago I got the urge to become a radio ham... only to use morse... I attended a course in Tyldesley over 6mths to brush up on theory side... I passed the morse exam easily (of course) I scraped through on the theory side... my allocated call-sign is 2E0ARV . . Thatcallsign stays with me... thats a novice licence with power output restrictions... a couple of matey hams set me up with a set to send and receive morse... got contacts in Russia and all over Europe.... when I moved homes 10yrs ago I gave it all to another youngster who was interested and havent touched a morse key since.... Strange I know... but I may join a radio hams club one day.
