Wigan Today, 12th Jul:

I do hope he is advocating mask wearing and social distancing during this "event".

Good point, Angelwood.

www.gov.uk:

Most restrictions on meeting people outdoors have been lifted, but gatherings must not exceed 30 people unless covered by a legal exemption

And as Wigan is an area where the Delta variant is spreading fastest:

You should try to:
Keep 2 metres apart from people that you do not live with (unless support bubble)
Minimise travel in and out of affected areas

Are written objections still being accepted or is it yet another done deal. The crazy thing is that plenty towns would love a development like the Galleries and the market hall

I-Spy, objections submitted online will be accepted till 20th July, but I don’t know how you go about sending in your comments otherwise.

Golden Bear, I’m not connected to the protest, but do admire those involved for trying, and but for the restrictions would join them if I could.

Complete waste of time. How many people protested about the demolition of the Market Hall??? Didn't make one iota of difference. The council have made up their mind. By allowing these protests is just paying LIP SERVICE to the Wigan people.

Do I detect a hint of cynicism, Admin?

Four days left to submit views to Wigan Council.

Thanks, Fred. I do understand Admin’s cynicism given the council’s track record. I just wish this time they’ll listen.

Most comments so far are worth a read through, there’s lots of common sense.

Some of the objections from Wigan Building Preservation Trust (Wed 14 Jul):

“In the immediate vicinity are a number of original Victorian and Georgian buildings which have lain empty for a number of years … These buildings represent some of our 'heritage at risk' and should be renovated and re-purposed as the first priority.

The Planning Departments Prospectus suggests that the New Market Street properties, some of which are Council owned, are candidates for demolition.

The Council's Planning and Heritage objectives appear to be disconnected.“
