Riversiders

Started by: hilly (76)

Been watching Wigan RLFC old matches during covid, and noticed Australian commentators often refferring to Wigan as " The Riversiders ". I used to watch in the sixties from the end pen, but cannot recall anyone using that title. Anyone actually remember the name, or is it an Aussie description ?

I remember Eddie Waring calling Wigan the Riversiders but I don't think it was that popular with fans.

Enjoyed going to the Riverside and had some great nights up there. John Martin as the compere set the tone for some fantastic turns. I remember Jimmy Metcalfe on the door, top bloke.

Jo anne. It used to be a great night in the rugby club. I'm sure John Martin used to sing 'You'll Never Walk Alone' at some stage during his spot. Everyone standing on the seats. That might have been his last number of the night?

I never saw him perform at the Riverside but l saw him a few times when he did the club circuit.
He always sang Something Inside So Strong and a very good version he did of it. I can't remember whether or not that was his finishing song but it always went down well

Thanks for the suggestions of John Martin’s finale song. I’m thinking of the late ‘80s/ early ‘90s, and Gideonfel might be right with “You'll Never Walk Alone”.

Gentleman that reminds me.... When I was an Ince Bobby 1980-1990..jimmy had a chip shop up HR Ince... One night a tool thought he would get one over on Jimmy by throwing a car wheel through his chippy window... Thus destroying his soaking peas for the day after..... Eventually we got a call that Jimmy had apprehended the offender on Ince bar... We got there to see this bludgeoned person squeeling for help... We took him in and guess what... No complaint of damage the day after.... The tool coughed up big style... Happy days.
