The forgotten air disaster

Started by: linma (2597)

It’s 50 years ago this weekend since the Dan Air flight from Manchester to Barcelona crashed into mountains 30 miles off course killing everyone on board. There were Wiganers on board. I worked at County police in Crawford Street and that Saturday morning was my turn to work (I was a typist) and I remember the message coming through. It was ‘the forgotten air disaster’ but I have never forgotten.

Those kind of things stay with you Linma, terrible.

Did you know Joan Moriarty (Francis) at Crawford Street?

I was with John and his girlfriend in the Sportsman's club the day before i.e. Thursday. He was saying this time tomorrow I'll be having a pint is Benidorm I along with a couple of friends were traveling down to Newquay on the Saturday morning, we had stayed over in a hotel in NAILSEA on the Friday night so never heard the news until we heard the news on the car radio. ..Put a bit of a damper on the holiday..

O years, the name Moriarty does ring a bell, but the Joan I remember lived in Shevington Moor and her husband was Sid and she left and went to work at Wrightington Hospital. Is that the same one? I worked at Crawford Street from the middle 60’s to the early seventies.
