an Event we should have all been aware of

A brave WW1 soldier was honoured today by having his name forever etched on wigan streets
Woodcock walk, Unfortunatly very few knew of the event

That's right Tom, I don't think that many people were aware of this event. There is a nice memorial to him outside of Woodcock House in Scholes. If you get a chance to read his citation It's quite impressive.

I heard the story on the radio. A brave man who like millions of others should never be forgotten,

i dont like just honouring one of the fallen, there's plaques of them outside wigan parish church .every name a family's sadness,why not rename wallgate, memorial road.

It was on BBC Northwest Tonight on Thursday, they were in St Pats junior skool asking the kids what they thought about it and it was on ITV news too,, as well as the Wigan Council website, so yoo would be better off watching local telly programs more, instead of moanin about Marus Bridge ex roundabout junction ...

thers a couple on here Tom and you know who I refer to, would sooner forget and go beyond all reason by blaming the brits for the worlds sickness????????what rat hole did they arrive from TOM??????? sooner theyre slung in the tower for treason, the better.

As Tuddy said, Lance Corporal Woodcock has also been honoured with a new artwork installation at Woodcock House in Scholes, which was named after him. 'Artist Mark Mennell worked with pupils from St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School to produce the striking metal sculpture & glass mosaic.'

Fair point B B, but Tommy Woodcock was awarded the Victoria Cross, and as I said, if you read his citation his actions were pretty impressive. I believe that Wooodcock Street, which has now become Woodcock Square, was also named after him.

a fair point indeed BB, all gave some, some gave all and to get awarded with a VC, they gave more than was expected, they lost their lives helping or protecting others, a selfless act of bravery that officers above them felt their act should be rewarded in some way,

He was a true hero and deserves recognition

am I the oly one thinking thaqt something ain't right with the first memorial above ? looks like paint has been splahed on brickwork and they couldn't be bothered to clean it up before mounting the memorial plaque / perspex !
the one at Woodcock house looks brill , pity they couldn't have straightened the sign on the grass though !

Yup.

There was a nice touch at the rugby this afternoon when the match ball was presented to the teams by Thomas Woodcock's granddaughter, she was well applauded by the crowd.
