Are they one and the same and which is right

The church is St.Catharine's, Peter. Either the council sign-making-mon can't spell, or the street name is not linked the church?

I’ve researched family history in Catherine Street and was similarly puzzled.
St Catherine’s School and Church are on the 1847 OS Map. The closest name roads to the church were Belvoir St, Schofield Lane and Birkett Bank. The school is on Schofield Lane as it remains today but with no side road.

On the 1889 OS Map, the road at side of the school, Catherine Street had been built. Also in 1889 Elizabeth Street had appeared being the next street up, off Schofield Lane.

By WW1, there were two new adjacent streets to Elizabeth: Isabella and Florrie.
By WW1 Scholes also had a Florence, Caroline, John, Albert, Victoria, Rose, Edward, Isabella, Cecil, William & Frederick Street. The common theme is clearly forenames, where I guess Catherine Street was likely influenced by School/Church. The Church itself has always been in Lorne Street. Today’s street sign is correct.

I'll have to alter my records at work because it was always thought that the school name was St Catherine's, and we were never told any different.

Yes, Catherine and Catherine are two separate distinct names, and both signs are correct, but I never realised that they were different.

But the map is wrong, this is from the Church of England website LINK and just about every other thing on the web says the same thing, St Catharine's Church in Scholes Wigan, is spelt with an 'A' not an 'E'

Thank you, but I asked Mrs Google about this and she told me it's St Catharine's, not St Catherine's, as is the church. However, I shall telephone them tomorrow and ask for correct spelling.

Latics, Interesting - I never noticed the e / a difference about the church or school!

Mollie - My post was about the name of the road showing the corresponding street sign was correct. Here are the c. 1918 and current Ordnance Survey maps showing it is simply Catherine Street. thanks Catherine St OS

Thanks Pewfall, I understand that. There's a Catherine Street and a Catherine Terrace, but I still need to know if the school sign is spelt correctly though, which it looks like it is. So what was the deliberate mistake? They are apparently both correct.

Sorry Mollie, I shortened and edited and my last reply at the same time you just got back to me. I agree both are correct with possible exception to the e/a in Catherine ref the School and Church that Latics pointed out and i never noticed. The 'deliberate mistake' I think Tonker meant was, should it be "Catherine Street" or "St. Cathe(a)rine Street" like the Church and school. This is what threw me off researching family a while back

It is the blue sign on tonker's image that is wrong as the person who did the sign has put a 'a' instead of a 'e' on the what is the correct name of St Catherine's C of E Primary School.
