Windows 11 upgrade

Not long now till Windows 10 is consigned to history. Will your PC let you upgrade, or will it be going to landfill?

If it was up to me I'd have stuck with Windows 7. Believe me, Windows 11 is a pain in the rear end. I use 10 here at home (against my better judgement), but we use 11 at work. It is riddled with pop-ups and constantly interferes with the flow of work.
Thing is, Microsoft don't keep updating for our benefit, but theirs and, harking back to your Air Fryer thread a few months ago, it can gather a lot more information about you than currently with its bl**dy AI infestation, so I'll stick with Win10 for as long as I'm able.

Mollie, I just recently got a new puter because my old one was full and I was getting problems so, geet a new un, its on Windows 11, Things are faster and it just a case of, getting used,

Tom, why did you get a new computer just because it was full? That's like getting a new car because the ash tray is full. There are ways of clearing old data from a computer called defragmentation, which is very easy to use. If you don't clear your cookies regularly, the hard drive will get chocker and slow it down. Then, once cookies have been deleted, they stay in the hard drive until you use the defrag to get rid altogether.
That's why the Police can retrieve information from a computer if the owner doesn't delete from the hard drive, and even then they probably have other ways to retrieve, even if that old data has become decayed.

I need a new system, because this one can't have Windows 11, so I think that when the time comes, I am going to put Linux on this one, because it is years since I last mucked about with Linux

I think I may have been misunderstood when I mentioned pop-ups. They're not pop-ups for adverts, but little boxes suggesting update this, try that, etc etc. Can't remember them all as I just close them down immediately.
As to the computer slowing down, well, what's the rush? APLS will confirm or deny this, but it depends on how many GBs your computer is installed with. If it's only 2GB then yes, it will soon get full. I've got 4GB on mine and I check my C Drive regularly to see how much space I have in the hard drive.

Ive got windows 10 at home. And, I'm sticking with it until the end. Supported or not supported / updated.
It does what I want it to do. I only browse the internet on it. I don't watch films or download / upload anything of note.
You can have the most expensive PC in the UK, but, your computer is only as fast as your internet provider will allow it to be

I don't embrace new technology though because, as we chatted, about a couple of months ago, new technology will one day soon take over from humans. The truth is though Tom, why would I want to keep up with technology at my age? I might have another year, two if I'm lucky, before I'm sitting on a fluffy white cloud in the sky, so I'll just enjoy what I can and not get addicted to a machine.
Computer updates are a scam and they're getting easier to gain information from your personal interaction with them. Not for this lickle chicking.
My brother came to visit me this afternoon and we got chatting about the outlets that had closed down and he mentioned banks. He lives in Standish and there are none there any longer, same as Pemberton. He had to go to his in Wigan not long ago and he told me that there are no longer any counters with people serving, but machines. He also said there were a couple of young women you could ask if the machines couldn't help, so you see, it's already started. How are old people supposed to cope who are not computer savvy?

You only have to watch some of the quiz shows like eggheads to see how many today are as thick as two short planks where the answering of simple questions we learned at junior schools is concerned?
Yet many of them get jobs on television and other well paid positions!

mollie, I take it not "embracing new technology" means you wont be
updating to a digital phone line when analogue lines are phased out. I'd start looking for a cheap mobile phone deal if I were you.

If you do decide to purchase a mobile phone, make sure it is at least a 4g as anything below 3g in September are also being phased out in another excerise to make more money for those providing the technology and services.
They now never ceased in thinking up ways of ripping off we the public and some even enbrace it!
Replied: 28th Apr 2025 at 12:12

The 4g is a load of scaremongering, needless, panic inducing propoganda to try and make you buy a more expensive phone!
I was on 3g with Asda and they have already switched off their 3G network across the UK so they can focus on better connections with 4G and 5G services.
Mine is still working perfectly
My phone is now using the 2G network instead. And there is absolutely no difference whatsoever
I'm still very much able to send texts and make / receive calls!
Anyone explain, or even justify why they even changed to 4g?
How is 4g better than 3g, or even 2g?

100% happy, First Mate.
After all, it is only a mobile phone designed for making calls, and sending messages. I can even take photographs on it so, that is a bonus!
What else do you want / expect from a telephone?

I hang my head in shame Mollie, I would't have a snowballs chance in hell on the Chace, I might have a small chance in, 'facing the chaser' because you can rule out some answers with logic but, The cash builder and final chase, there's no time to think, Even if they asked me a really easy plumbing question , I'd be too combobulted to answer, Hats off to those who enter, its a big challenge in the ' hot seat'

Maybe so, but I bet you would know that in London, the ravens are at the Tower of London and not St Pauls Cathedral as answered by a contestant on Celebrity Eggheads.
Replied: 28th Apr 2025 at 23:01

There was a question on there tonight. Can't remember the exact wording, but the very obvious answer was Stonehenge, but the contestant replied the Great Wall of China! Celebrities are the worse. One lass from Hollyoaks was asked what was the young of a cow called. Answer - baby horse! Now, I ask you! You couldn't make it up.
Tom, there's no need to feel ashamed at all. You know your limits and capabilities, but some of these people honestly believe they have exceptional general knowledge, yet don't know the answers to even the simplest questions. Some fool must tell them they're good enough though. Not all the questions are easy otherwise there'd be no point. I can't answer a question on sport, politics or maths because they're not in my wheelhouse, but I'm reasonable on most other things, but not 100% of anything.

I suspect that after a recording, the eggheads have a right good laugh at some of the answers that they have come out with during a show, especially those by the celebrities.
Could be a reason why no series have been made!
