Ena yes there is Meat in those pies and in the time honored potions of mostly potato, they also do a chunky steak pie which is as described, it has a good filling of chunky steak pieces but its cost is £1.95 and, does not meet my criteria of, ' living to ones pocket' , The meat n prato is a good filling meal and satisfys my needs, the salad is to restore the balance of pastry and fat with more healthy 5 a day fruit n veg for my physical well being,

I used to love buying pies. Meat from Galloway's and Meyt and prayter from Muffin Man, but they've priced themselves out for me now, except on the odd occasions.

I make my own meat pies and pasties now and mine are just as good as bought ones; simple enough to make as we were taught in cookery class at school.

I've never had a cookery lesson in my life, at skool when the girls dis cookery with their little baskets and pinny , we did woodwork or metalwork and rightly so imho but , times have changed and with the aid of instant mash and aunty Bessy , I can fool the grandkids into thinking my homecooked Cornish pasties were delivered by ' just eat' , I doubt that I could fool Ena nor Mollie, They are basically cornbeef hash wrapped in instant pastry mix,,,,

Tomplum:

There's nothing wrong with corned beef hash in ready made pastry. I've made those myself when I've had left-over hash.

i-spy:

True Cornish pasties are made in Cornwall, as you know, and Ginster's are genuine Cornish pasties, or so we're led to believe. I watched Gregg Wallace's Inside the Factory at Ginster's in Cornwall to show how they're made. Very interesting it was too.

I-spy.... i mentioned the same in a previous post...... and yes, Ginsters are about as Cornish as Rab Nesbit. I'm in Plymouth this week where it's Ivor Dewdney pasties. I'll be nipping on the ferry over the border Saturday to see recent prices there.

same time post Mollie, sorry!..............i grew up in Cornwall many years ago. ginsters may be made in Cornwall but to me they don't resemble what we used to buy from local shops back in the 70's, 80's there , locally made and for sale small scale sale in post offices, corner shops etc. Ginsters is a successful brand but these things are highly processed and sit 'fresh' in vending machines for days. Pasties i had as a kid were baked daily and would have gone off left in a machine.

Use to have pasty man deliver them piping hot, midday, when I worked in Cornwall in 1960's.

Same chap used to deliver them to my tent in 1980's when I regularly camped at London Apprentice.

Not been to Cornwall for a couple of decades now though.

Pewfall, are you telling us that you cannot get the real thing now, even in Cornwall?

Also used to camp in a wood on fringe of Dartmoor, somewhere North of Sparkwell. There, the nearest pub did superb 'DEVON' pasties: Tasted as good as the Cornish, just they were crimped differently!

Making a thing about pies, seems to have taken off in Wigan in the second half of the Twentieth Century.

Has it had any bearing upon quality though?

In Bryn, in 1950's, I was able to buy excellent pies, both meat and meat and potato.

Since then, some of the worst pies I have ever tasted have been bought in Wigan and its environs. When visiting Wigan, if with friend who buy pies, I have chosen to give them a miss, and have some chips or a sandwich instead!

I've never bought anything out of a vending machine as I've no idea how long an item has been there.

As for Ginster's pasties, I'll have to take your word for it but, I do admit, the ones I have had haven't, to me, been up to the standard of many pie shop pasties as they're nearly all pastry with little filling. I like a nice plump pasty.

Tommy T said:

Years ago, I stopped eating pies. Found I could not tolerate pastry, it gave me acute heartburn and indigestion.

Seems that as you get older, it is not uncommon to find it harder to digest meals that have high fat levels.

Then, last year, I found that once again I was able to eat Cornish Pasties. I was surprised. Never realised that such intolerance could also reverse.

I know that I cannot manage flaky pastry or shortcrust.

But, maybe pie made with a low fat pastry is once again a possibility. When I get some free time, I will have to experiment and see if pies can be on the menu again.

(it is not simply fat levels though, as I have been able to manage croissants, and they too are high fat content)

35 years ago I'd sometimes buy Greenhalgh's pies for lunch when I was at work. However, I started to notice after I'd eaten one, my stomach started to give me gyp and I got heartburn as well, so I stopped buying them and changed to Galloway's and Muffin Man. No problem with those There must be something in Greenhalgh's pastry that disagreed with me. They were tasty though.

I make my own. Just cost me £9.98 for the meat alone. It will make 4 deep, decent size individual pies. Then there is the cost of the other ingredients, including the ingredients for the pastry plus the cost of cooking them. I'm cooking these for some of my family. For or the rest of us I'm making a Thai green chicken curry. I can understand why shop pies are the price they are, even though they don't use quality produce for the fillings, and haven't done fore many years. I haven't eaten a shop bought pie for a long time.

No, I don't believe yoo and I don't believe Tiger Puss, because yoo see Basil, yoo being a mangy, nasty, flea bitten fox, I frequent that location, mainly to buy the odd tipple from the Bargain Booze and occasionally, mainly in winter, I buy 'produce' from the 'produce' shop there, both those emporiums being in the old Graham Fairhurst telly shop, because I used to live an hop, skip and a jump from there.

They started selling pies from the back of the shop when the pandemic struck, some three years ago now, and since then the front shop part has been closed, so how can it knock a closed shop for six, more like it's out for a duck, and if as yoo say it is not Galloways, then I am sure Galloways would have removed their branding from the shop part, so stick that in your flea bitten pipe and smook it

I was working in Warrington in 2016-2018 and came to Wigan for a M&P and Butter pie and to my mind they aren't the same as they used to be. I remember pies being a pale colour with a slightly greasy base (lard?) The inside had big lumps of solid potato and meat, butter pies from Chorley being bright yellow. The pies I had a few years ago were gold and crusty with a more runny filling which isn't natural.

Best pies ever were from the short lived pie shop at the bottom of Soughers Lane (1973/4 just as I was leaving junior school) opposite Bridal Belles. I never understood why they closed.

Funnily enough, one of the best pies I’ve had was over here, in Spain. It was Steak and Guinness.

And, while you’re interested in Black Puddings, you should see them over here!
There’s more black puddings here than you ever would imagine!
It shows Wigan up on the black pudding front!

I don't doubt it, but I like the Lancashire kind boiled with pepper and vinegar. I like French food, but sometimes you just want a burger

They eat Catalan food here. It’s not much different to ours at home. A couple of Sundays ago, we went to a local restaurant for Sunday roast dinner.
Beef (and lots of it), gravy, potatoes, broccoli, carrots, cabbage, with a big Yorkshire pudding on top, and a side-bowl of horse-radish sauce. How good is that for Catalan food in Spain?
Oh., and a bottle of vino-negre each, €13. I’m going again on Sunday. I’ll take its picture!

Do you live there or just holiday?

I half live here, but I half live in Ashton too! I don’t ‘holiday’ often!

Well while we're on this subject, Pepper Lane pie shop closed down a few weeks ago, and they were one of my favourites, and only £1-70 for a steak pie.

Pepper Lane pie-shop pies were actually made at a bakery in Chorley. The bakery that makes the pies hasn’t closed down!

I’m definitely going to bed now. Pit in t’morning!

Yes, I remember meat & potato pies being just like that, and they were larger than the standard size is now, but back in the day plenty of places served 'hot pies' and they kept them warm in a 'Pie Warmer' which was a heated glass cabinet kept on a shop counter, and normally it was lit up too, and chip shops kept their pies in pie warmers too, so I suppose the idea was to slightly undercook them, because they would continue to be cooked in the 'Pie Warmer' and that maybe also explained why when I ate a 'pale meat and potato pie with a damp lard bottom, it used to give me {{horrendous}} indigestion (heartburn) but with the advent of microwaves, the pie warmers were phased out

Yep, you could eat them hot straight from the shop or take them home and have them while still half warm. The thing I don't like about modern pies is the filling seems a bit sloppy in comparison. I was lucky I never had any side effects.

That Pimblett’s pie shop in Golborne do a meat and potato pie with that old-school filling, which is good. But, the pastry is deplorable! It’s not like cardboard, more like hardboard! It’s only thin pastry, but you could patch a tarpaulin with it!

They’re called Bowen’s Pies. You’ll have to google who sells them. There’s one in Adlington.

Gents Pepper Lane pie shop has always made their own pies, hot pots, bread and cakes.
Bowens are very good, and if you want to taste them around Wigan, go to the Robinson convenience shop in Standish they have cold ones which they will microwave for you.
Another good pies and bread shop is Handleys on Pall Mall Chorley

I used to make pies for the family but gave up. Any decent meat and ingredients costs a fortune to buy now. That's why the pies from any pie shops are so inferior from the ones in times gone by.
A pie was cheap and cheerful back then but not any more.

Despite this being an old thread, and resurrected and dredged up again, I never replied in this at the time.

My own personal choice of pie is Muffin Man's meat and potato, and Greenhalgh's meat but, best of all, are my home made pies. Unfortunately I don't have as much energy as I used to, so I haven't made any in a while, but I'll give it another go at some point.

They sold some nice stuff in Gents at Pepper Lane, not just pies, cakes, fruit pies, scones, sandwiches thicker than a phone book. And another thing that I liked, they didn't use a till, they reckoned everything up with a pencil on a paper bag, and it was always correct. Apparently they'd been trading for seventy years.

Yes, the butties were great, thick white bread with either Ham and Branston or Beef and Piccallili

I've heard the business has been sold to the owners of a cafe in Standish.
