What got Grayson Perry to tweet about Wigan town centre this summer?

Grayson Perry, CBE (born 24 March 1960) is an English artist, known mainly for his ceramic vases and cross-dressing. (Wiki)

Knowing GP I suspect it might be to do with that (as Old Mother Walter calls it) "that daft statue of a big yed"

Either that or he was asking jay to write some scripts for him

Or both ?

An ugly head indeed: lowers the tone of Wigan. Off to the tip with it!

"that daft statue of a big yed" Got it in one, Walter!

Grayson Perry wasn't too complimentary about it either.

At least it grabbed Grayson's attention, no publicity is bad publicity, Priscus.

Well I LIKE it, so there there with knobs on

So do I, Ray. It's a real head-turner. What use is a piece of art if it's bland & just blends in?

If it can catch the attention of someone as extraordinary as Grayson Perry, then I say, "Go, Rick Kirby!"

The Face of Wigan was on telly yesterday - it did us proud! (Sir Ian McKellen eat your heart out!)

ITV News

Has anyone seen Sir Ian's portrait by Laura Quinn now on display at The Museum of Wigan Life?

I'd rather look at the big head in Wigan than Grayson Perry's big head.

Kath, I agree with you. I saw some of his work in the Tate at St Ives a few years ago. The exhibition included one of his frocks.

Not impressed

Morning jo anne, thanks for the link, I missed the programme.

I know there have been many changes to the town centre, but for me it was lovely to see it, and the arcades.

Makes me homesick

It has seen lots of changes, Jazzy, but I still like going to Wigan.

after 30 years living way, i am now back in wigan and they have ruined it. the lovely old buildings gone . ugly monsters in the place. hardly any market and no atmosphere at all. Looking round it seems hundreds of thousands of money has been wasted. too many bars and too much rubbish.

Oh Kayleigh, I've been away 30 years. I have visited up until about 10 years ago, but I am coming home in the spring when our building works are finished (ha ha).

I hope I can still recognise the old place.

Kayleigh, where I live the town centres are little changed since god knows when. The high streets are very picturesque, and the many are listed buildings.

Suffolk is a farming area, so quite poor wages etc, and it does make you wonder if lack of money is why the town centres escaped being improved.

BUT listed buildings are not very user friendly, floors go up and down, and there is nearly always a big step up into the premises. They are not very practical.

My daughter is a wheelchair user. Recently she needed to see a solicitor, and was unable to get into the building, so the solicitor came out to the car park, and the business was done in the car!

I think there are swings and roundabouts regarding "improving" things, but I have to admit I always loved the old red brick buildings in Wigan.

I hope there's still a few left when I finally manage to visit.

A few pics of Diss, our nearest town about 3 miles away. The mere is at the end of the high street directly opposite Greggs the Bakers, which is handy!
