Welcome Signs :o)

Started by: jo anne (34726)

With thanks to Dave B for the photo of the Welcome to Haigh sign.

Has anyone got photos of any of the other signs in the Wigan borough at present? Or can you describe what is depicted on them?

What do you think could be included in signs for the different places across the borough?
(Both for areas with pre-existing signs and those yet to have ones put in place.)

No, not yet, Dostaf. I wonder who is involved when a sign is being designed?

Welcome to Abram

"Early in 2002, Wigan Council gave back Abram its identity! Boundary signs had been missing for many years, but after consultation with Abram Community Link new signs were designed by the Council. The Maypole logo is based on the traditional English Maypole of the Abram Morris Dancers, but is also intended to act as a reminder of Abram's past as a mining community, in particular by remembering the Maypole Colliery. The design also features flowers in 'canal art' style, a pointer to Abram's proximity to the Leeds and Liverpool canal."

I don't know, Kath - hopefully someone will be able to tell us.

I have seen the sign for Hindley Green recently - that has a picture of a lake/pond with waterfowl - ducks and/or geese?

Seriously, I think there may be some older aspects to Marsh Green. Not sure about some other places which are relatively new.

mentioning Marsh Green didn't the council at one time wanted to let part of the old clay quarry there to flood to form a lake, the residents objected I seem to remember but the houses around the lake at Hindley Green have always been very sought after so perhaps the Marsh Greeners missed out on having a des res.

I wonder what the artwork for Scholes would include?

Seriously:

Would they look to the past, or to the present and future with the new fangled 'Scholes Village' identity?

WLT perhap? And who could leave out Sholeshenge?

Growing up, 'Scholes' would make me think of the precinct as we walked through there enroute to Wigan town centre. I don't think it's as thriving a shopping centre now, but there's Sunshine House nearby.

Water Heyes came to mind for a historical type connection.

Interesting thread

There's almost an historical feel about the area being a reminder of the whole 1960's redevelopement thing.

He was in Hadfield dostaf, otherwise known as Royston Vasey The League of Gentlemen, he showed a photo of the trainers hanging from a telephone line that are shown in the opening credits.

But I now think you're photo is of trainers in Wigan.

I did see it, Ayrefield. The war memorial was a giveaway. Even though there are many similar in the area.

The trainers I used just came from google.

Oy - (Abram) 'The teapot is from the top of the old Abram Morris Maypole.'

Dingerbell - 'Glad to see Hindley Green have the old CLAY HOLE on their welcome sign.'

There are banners featuring the old borough crests from what became asorbed into Wigan, in the Town hall chamber.

On examination of the evidence available, I find that you were correct in the first instance, Dave. The signage is, indeed, sited on the Leigh side of the boundary in question and is, therefore, on Wigan Road.

However, the junction still isn't Bickershaw Lane junction, and Leigh still doesn't exist, having been abolished on passing of the Local Government Act 1972 which came into force in April, 1974.

So don't be thinking you're dead clever for winning that one!

Just found a photo by Rev David Long of Crested China, Spring View - WW Album (No date given)

The Rev's comment:

'I would expect Wigan to have justified making a "special" for the town and its surrounds - but one for the little settlement of Spring View - with very "local" references, like the wagon works (above the shield), as well as the pit brow lass, mines, mine cars etc which you might find for other mining communities?'

Edit : and this photo, too - Crested China

Re: the red & white 'rope' beneath the mine car on Spring View's sign & the crested china - photo.

There's a pub called The Walmsley Arms in Spring View - its sign has red/white 'ribbons' depicted upon it - which made me think to look up the Walmsley Coat of Arms:

Walmsley Coat of Arms

Could the white/red beneath the lion be coincidental & what does it depict - any ideas?

(And some local 'Dad's Army' moments are mentioned by Roy in WW Album.)

Welcome to Hindley and Platt Bridge's sign
