Now thats a nice photo Mick. Very smart gates, pretty lodge house, leafy trees. I like it.
I suppose the Pick & Shovel denote where the Crawford's money came from?

This photo would look better if it were taken with snow on the ground.
I'm not moaning it's just my opinion.

John(Howfen), you're correct, it is a very good photo of an interesting subject.
The gates have just been refurbished to a high standard by Haigh Foundry. The shovel and a pick are tools that Wiganers working down the coal mines would have used.
Who lives in the gatehouse? Well, it used to be the Wigan council wildlife ranger, and I think it still is because you can see his initials on the car parked outside.

The shovel and pick could also denote the creation of the plantations.

Helen I very much doubt the Lynsays (not Crawfords) made their money from picks and shovels. They are aristocrats and always have been.

Mick…. Would those initials be G and W. If so I knew him as a child.

Yes Anne, it will be the person, I think he once told me comes from Darlington st.
I can't believe Irene not found herself lost by looking at this photo, because I know she spent a lot of time in the plantations, and I thought at the time of me taking the photo that it would bring back loads of childhood memories to her.
