I hope the owner's were well compensated! I can't imagine being told I was living above a mineshaft! How curious it wasn't known about when the houses were built - why do we pay for search fees?
Mind you it happened were I live in W/H. With some beautiful new houses- they all had to be vacated and were empty for years - and classed as a 'Danger Area'. The owners were all out of pocket though with one expense after another.

The shaft/workings were probably unrecorded. No doubt there are many others in the Wigan area.

I read that there were 133 pits in the Wigan area in 1882
