This is a great site. Lived in Wigan from 1977 till about 1986 (Winstanley area). I am looking for Claire Morrison who now lives in Australia, she lived in Andover Crescent and has two sisters, she still has contact with Gillian Brown also from Winstanley. Claire should be 34/35 now and i know she has two kids. Maybe sombody knows Gillian Brown(Maiden Name). Claire and Gillian went to Ashton n Mak. High School. I lived over the road from Claire and her family an went with claire to Winstanley primary and Marus Bridge Middle.

I was told by a friend that a picture of my house was on this Wigan site. I can't understand why because I live in St. Helens. So, on the offchance that these pictures have been taken for the benefit of Wigan Council ie. car parking / overhanging hedges / unauthorised access etc. etc. etc., well, I'm afraid you'll get nothing on us as we're not under your control. Please stick to taking pictures in Wigan in future, Thank You !

My mother was born in Hindley (Algernon Street)her maiden name was Roughley, she had two sisters Alice and Mary and a brother (surviving twin) James who was murdered prior to my mother's marriage in 1951. Her parents were Peter and Louise, Peter was the minister at the Independant Methodist Church on the crossroad of Argyle Street and Algernon Street. If anyone has any recollections of these people and more importantly can remember the outcome of the murder trial of Peter Roughley I would very much appreciate it. Many thanks

From the site by accident, very interesting. Anyone around from Atherton Road, Hindley Green between 1948-60 went to St Johns then Sec. Modern. Lost touch with all my school pals. Anyone who might recall me, send me an email please. Would love a trip down memory lane

My Dear Art ! ? , Please read the History of The Company ( Marks and Spencer ) where you will find that the partnership of M. Marks and T. Spencer took place in Manchester. At the time of the partnership formation M. Marks ran a shop in Cheetham Hill and T. Spencer was a cashier/accountant with a Manchester Wholesale Company. Their first joint venture was in Derby Street, Manchester. M. Marks had traded in many towns in the North West, prior to the partnership, Wigan being one in the many, but Marks and Spencer was formed in Manchester, not Wigan.

Gavin the Historian,I don't think ;o(
"Leeds is famous for its shops and it is interesting to note that Michael Marks of Marks & Spencer was a Lithuanian Jew who began trading in Leeds in 1884 with a penny bazzar store at which everything cost a penny. He later moved to Wigan where he teamed up with Tom Spencer of Skipton to form what was to become one of the most famous British retailing companies of all time."

This site has several false claims. ie. Marks and Spencer was founded in Manchester not Wigan. Peter Kane ( ex world boxing champ ) never lived in Wigan ( Golborne, Warrington and Pewfall, St. Helens. ). Astley Colliery, Salford, Wigan ? ? ? Jesus Christ born in King Street ? The list is endless. Then again, it's not hard to make a Wiganer believe a story !

This isn't meant to be an advertising post, I'll gain nothing physically from it but I was just wondering if you would help spread the word, big Wigan Warriors fan and moderator of the Wigan-Warriors.com message board and the fans on there are trying to organise a carnival like atmosphere for the last two home matches, just hoping to lift the lads spirits a bit. Hoping to get a few more drummers in and get people to wear all cherry and white and make as much noise as possible, the fans are really up for the last push for a top 6 spot and we were wondering if there's any chance of a mention being given to let all know what the plan is. Blow up balls, wigs, face paints, confetti and more drummers, trumpets or flutes whatever, we just need the support, fans have been fantastic all year round and it's not exactly been easy this year!

Here's the link to the mentioned discussion
http://130.88.246.72/cgi-bin/wigan?status=Object.VIEW&ObjectID=145777#Object145777

Any help would be appreciated thankyou! Obviously, won't be offended if you have a problem adding this to the site. Thanks anyway

Interesting site! I just learned my great-grandfather (Walter Jackson) left Wigan with his four brothers in the early 1900s... this spurred by curiousity in Wigan.

Hopefully, I can visit one day!
