Excellent site for anything WIGAN related be it for News or Views.

I was actually looking for a picture of St. Thomas Church where my Great grandfather James Barlow married his first wife (Alice Anglesea) on Jan 14th 1899 as well as a pic of Central Hall where he married his second wife (Drusilla Hall) on Jan 1st 1902 after his first wife died in childbirth. I was also looking for a number of streets and addresses that my ancestors have lived...including 47 Darlington Street, 9 Weston Street, 190 Woodhouse Lane, 21 & 15 Driving Lane,154 Great George Street, Clayton Houses and 16 & 2 Pool Street. I am still navigating my way around the site and hope to uncover some additional information to help me in my quest to trace my Wigan lineage!

My Dad all sow, he to work on top at Park Collieries in the 1932 and 58ty he was a sawer in the saw mill, he sward, props,
And lids, wedges, and chocks,
He name was Tommy,
In the 50ty they moved him to summer sales war he retired in1960

I am tracing my family history, my late mothers family 'SPEAKMAN' came from GOOSE GREEN, POOLSTOCK, PEMBERTON etc. If anyone out there is connected to them or has any information they could share with me, I would love to hear from you!

i have lived in wigan all my life and love it( there is no place like home) i enjoy watching wigan rugby league theres plenty to do,lots of lovely friendly people who make anyone welcome in our town so come to wigan you will never regret it its a great town for all ages ( thats for everything)

Hi Carol yes St Oswalds is still standing,and it is on Liverpool rd,Ashton in Makerfield where your relation came from,a lovely old church with a long drive with trees either side.
There is a picture of the church if you type the address in ST OSWALDS CATHOLIC CHURCH LIVERPOOL RD ASHTON IN MAKERFIELD LANCASHIRE you should be able to find it

yes st oswalds is on liverpool road and going strong

I recently discovered that my parents (who are both deceased) were married at St.Oswald's Catholic Church in April, 1945. Does the church still exist? Their marriage license states that the church was on Liverpool Road in the county of Lancaster. My mother was from Ashton in Makerfield.

I went to rectory school

brilliant site so much information, it will take months to get through it all.Found what I was looking for, the pictures brought back happy memories. Just shows how proud Wiginers are of their town.

A nice tribute to Wigan and the surrounding ares. Nice to look at the past .

it shows how many people like to look back.i once read an article which said that some people think it a waste of time to look back, but the author disagreed, saying that althogh it is important to look to the future, "to refuse the backward glance would be to have lived for nothing." it's obvious that a lot of Wiganers out there agree.....Wigan World is BRILLIANT!
