Rose Cottage, Hall Lane, Haigh

Rose Cottage, Hall Lane, Haigh
I took a photo of this place about thirty years ago and I don't think anything as changed much.
Still well maintained and well kept.

Lovely sunny photo of a pretty cottage Dennis. Is it all one property or is the side bit another cottage ?

I can remember seeing that house on a walk down Hall Lane with a friend many years ago. What a lovely place to live.

Magnificent building full of character and charm and in Haigh, what more should we want.

There are many properties in Shevy/Dalton costing over a million pounds. But love this one.

It looks a bit too grand and modern to be called a cottage.
It’s a lovely house.

29317 , in Album , are these two the same I wonder . This looks refurbished to me so my first impression of this picture was to look for what it used to look like - that for me is where the real romance lies ! Like yesterday’s picture , can you imagine what it looked like before us lot arrived ? . Now we are saying that ourselves with the buildings and places we lost as the modern world closes in on us .

It hasn't changed very much from over fifty years ago either Dennis, though I'm sure the interior has.
I then worked at Potter's Herbal Supplies and the foreman of the malt works lived there with it being a tied cottage. The family who owned the malt works and Potter's Herbal Supplies also owned and lived in many of the properties around here, the ones I remember are this Rose Cottage, The Stables across from here and Haigh Cottage beyond the trees on the left, it was once the residence of the Lindsay's (Lord Crawford), who had it built to live in whilst Haigh Hall was being rebuilt in the mid 1800s. On this document 'link' you can see where the properties are, and how the Rose Cottages are defined and seperated. https://planningdocs.wigan.gov.uk/civica/Resource/Civica/Handler.ashx/Doc/pagestream?cd=inline&pdf=true&docno=14849092

There is this too when for sale, but unfortuntely without the interior photos.

As for 'Rose Cottage', it is a nice pleasant photo Dennis, and with pleasant weather for your walk along there, though the name 'Rose Cottage' would be renamed if I was to live there, especially so with it being the pseudonym used by hospitals for the mortuary.

Hi Cyril do you know if there is a written history of Potters? I have two photo albums full of photos of the owners and the products they manufactured. I was amazed at the variety of things they sold.

I remember when I worked at Bolton Hospital the pseudonym used when ringing for the Porters to come up to the ward. At one time some relatives came to the ward asking where ‘Rose Cottage’ was and could they go there to see their relative. We have a “Rose Cottage” in W/H both my grandchildren went there. They came out speaking what I would call ‘posh’ but they were taught to speak properly. It’s a wonderful Nursery I have to say. If ever I want to pick them up all the other little ones came swarming round me! §;o))

This is a lovely house Sue, I agree there's beautiful properties especially in Dalton and Parbold.

There is a Rose Cottage at Wigan Infirmary.

Comment by: Veronica on 1st August 2025 at 20:13

I think they( the pseudonym) are at most hospitals Sir Bob…
I’m surprised really it’s still used.

It’s more of a ‘euphemism’ really I often wondered how it started. Perhaps years and years ago.
