Handkerchief Tree
They make me sneeze something terrible.
Davidia involucrata, also known as the dove tree, ghost tree, handkerchief tree, pocket handkerchief tree, or is a medium-sized deciduous tree in the family Nyssaceae.
It is the only living species in the genus Davidia. It was previously included with tupelos in the dogwood family, Cornaceae. Fossil species are known extending into the Upper Cretaceous.
Good photo Mick, I particularly like the container its in.
i am waiting for the snotty comments
Must be quite a young tree as I see no 'handkerchiefs'. They can take years to flower , usually in May to June & of course I don't know when the photo was taken. The pic seems to be a bit 'over coloured ' but then perhaps thats just how it looks to me.
These trees are native to China and are considered rare in the British Isles. They are a striking and sought-after addition to gardens when they are in bloom in May, but their limited prevalence makes them far from a common sight. Tree and garden lovers will travel miles to view them. In late spring, when the Handkerchief Trees put on a spectacular show of bright-white bracts which unfurl to flutter in the lightest breeze and appear to look like handkerchiefs drying on a washing line in somebody's back yard.
That Samsung camera is not very good Mick.
In’t Wikipedia brilliant ?
Helen it was planted early this year and it had flowers on in May.
Yes Colin my friend the crown flower pot is lovely, it was paid for by the Wigan Rotory club.
Mick, is this a tree not to be sneezed at?
When visiting Haigh Hall I now know where to go if I need to blow my nose.
If you are sat under this tree licking your ice cream and reaching for a handkerchief from above to clean up the mess, be spare a thought and grateful to Charles Menches of Missouri who on this day in 1904 made the worlds very first ice cream cone!!!
Mike sorry to say that’s snot I Haigh Hall it’s in the gardens like you said the other day about a chippy in Morecambe it was actually in Heysham.
I think Ozy or is it Eddie means Google.
Cracking photo Mick.
No , Ozy or is it Eddie means Wikipedia …
If Ozy or is it Eddie had meant Google , he’d have typed Google , Sue … or is it Mick .
Mick it’s Wikipedia that Ozy meant and I understand that.Veronica I thought I might have seen you passing as I was at the JHC on Monday 1pm till 3pm Physio.
Really nice photo Mick. and thanks for the comprehensive History.
Very unusual photo once again mick, fantastic picture quality thank you.
China can keep them too, as there's not much to them, and according to thingamabob, they are quite common now in the UK parks

I'd sooner have a cherry tree as you get white flowers and later fruit, if you're lucky that the birds haven't got there first.
You can find anything with Google a fantastic engine.
Another beautiful photo Mick crystal clear photograph.
Cyril I fully agree with you.
This p-a-d is getting so tedious with alias pretending to praise the pics. You can tell a mile off......bad grammar and spelling mistakes too.
Snot all it’s cracked up to be that tree. Anything from Wikipedia/ Google should have quotation marks to give credit where it’s due.
I wasn’t there John on Monday. You can see my paintings on FaceBook sometimes. Provided you are a ’friend’ on there pal.
See Cyril, if you copy stuff from Google you should have quotation marks to give credit to where it's come from.
I think I'm going to start to post maps with distances, hills and smooth roads or rough tracks that I pedal along to take my photos.
Cyril definitely plays by the rules. He’s also helpful by ‘copying and pasting’ they don’t need quotation marks. ( apart from mine in this instance….
Unfortunately I don’t do Facebook Veronica.
