That’s a Blockbuster of a photo John. Well done one of the best I have seen for quite sometime.
The swans are very nosy too.

Comment by: Mark on 12th July 2025 at 00:31

Wonderful picture John , looks a bit chilly but also very invigorating ! Post again John , Thank you !

Comment by: PeterP on 12th July 2025 at 07:20

This chap looks cold .Thick jumper Body warmer and Hat.Some times nature STOPS because the birds get dependent on people feeding them and they forget how to forage for food

Comment by: Helen of Troy on 12th July 2025 at 07:32

That is one really good photo John....just great.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 12th July 2025 at 08:54

Lovely photo. The birds certainly look healthy and happy. Is that you, John, in the photo, or a friend of yours? I just get curious about what all the familiar names on p-a-d actually look like!

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 12th July 2025 at 09:09

I just love swans and ducks, not too keen on geese though, noise messy birds that tend to be more prolific.
Great photo John, let’s see more your photos.

Comment by: Mick on 12th July 2025 at 09:26

JohnBoy, I don't want to sound negative but to call this a wildlife photo then have most of the image taken up by a human.
And also I hope that's not bread that's not bread being fed to those wild swans, because that's a no no according to Dave Attenborough.

Comment by: John (Howfen) on 12th July 2025 at 10:24

That’s me on the 27th of February exactly a month after triple bypass, getting some exercise around Pennington Flash doing what I enjoy feeding the swans on proper swan and duck food. I’m off to Wigan to catch the train to London right now to see ELO tomorrow hopefully,my photos always seem to appear when I’m away or busy but I always reply be it today or next week, thanks for your thoughts.

I’ve just been corrected 23rd January when I had surgery.

Comment by: Roylew on 12th July 2025 at 10:49

That log in the water looks like a watersnake

Comment by: Arthur on 12th July 2025 at 10:59

One of my favourite places Pennington Country park, is so nice to cover other parts of Wigan. John your a star.

Comment by: Sue on 12th July 2025 at 11:10

Some of these birds are fledgings from this year. Nice to have photos away from Wigan for a change.
Mick use to bike all over the District and Pennington is a lovely place to take photos, especially since Wigan Council revamped the park.
John thanks for a great photo.

Comment by: Jeff on 12th July 2025 at 11:57

Pennington a favourite place for Dave Ogy, love all his photos especially birds and plants. Your missed Dave.
John one of the best yet and different.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 12th July 2025 at 12:04

You wouldn’t be wearing all that clobber today John, you’d be in your Speedo’s taking a dip.
Which reminds me of the line from Westhoughton’s most famous son, Robert Shaw:
‘Here’s to swimming with bow legged women’.
Veronica, please don’t take offence, I know you live in Westhoughton but was not eluding to you!!

Comment by: Mick on 12th July 2025 at 12:14

When was the photo taken as it looks very cold. I never like to be negative but he should be careful not to get to close to the geese. They can transfer diseases to humans.

Comment by: Veronica on 12th July 2025 at 14:36

Keep posting John and ignore the negative comments.
Plus it’s good to see a human being without the need for permission - at one with the wildlife. David Attenborough loved being filmed with animals so you’re in good company.
No I don’t have bow legs Colin just short and shapely and no varicose
veins! §;o))

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 12th July 2025 at 15:12

I've got bow-legs, Colin.....I couldn't stop a pig in an entry! And I'll flatten yon Robert Shaw when I see him, the cheeky beggar! xx

Comment by: Cyril on 12th July 2025 at 16:00

Great photo John, the birds at Pennington are always eager to have a scoff, and also in the hides, you get to see some beautifully colourful birds feeding. You never hear now of those Green Parrakeets, that had apparently escaped from local aviaries, they'd taken up residence there and successfully bred, they added a tropical touch.

Comment by: Dave on 12th July 2025 at 16:24

That’s the problem Mick we think we are the dominant species when these creatures came long before us . We are late arrivals with Huge Arrogant Heads and egos to match ! It’s no longer about what diseases they give to us but rather what we give to them !

Comment by: Mick on 12th July 2025 at 17:24

Well John Boy, I'm pleased you're not feeding bread to the wildlife, Ive just come back from Morcambe where I had some excellent fish and chips from a chippy named McCanns.
But after it was too hot to do anything, so we came home.

Comment by: Mick on 12th July 2025 at 17:35

Just read what you're up to today John, and I think you must be mad to be travelling to London to sit or stand in a field watching some old pensioner pop singer you will find it hard at your age coping with all those crowds and you wont be able to hear much because all the folk whos got money to burn will be drowning him out with there singing.
Then you'll have to locate the toilets. When you need to go, you'll push your way out, queue up to use them, and then push your way back to where you started.

Comment by: Helen of Troy on 12th July 2025 at 18:24

I was hoping there would be no negative comments on this
brilliant photo but sadly someone let me down, such a shame.

Comment by: Mick on 12th July 2025 at 19:17

Jeff Lynne cancels final live show over health. if this is who you have gone to see, John, you must be disappointed, but I would take it as a blessing in disguise.
You can always have boat ride down the Thames to the barrier and back, it will be a lot cooler on the river.

Comment by: John (Howfen) on 12th July 2025 at 19:26

What a great group of people you are thank you,I learned earlier that the ELO concert is off tomorrow and believe it or not I’m relieved as I was panicking with the thought of being packed tight with thousands of people in this heat and our ticket money returned will pay for an holiday, hopefully see you all soon.

Comment by: Veronica on 12th July 2025 at 19:36

A holiday will do you more good John. Find somewhere nice not too suffocatingly as hot as today!

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 12th July 2025 at 19:57

Agreed, Helen. That's why I put a bit of nonsense on about my bow legs for a laugh. You get sick of the constant moaning and fault finding on p-a-d photos from a certain person, unless they're his own photos. John, I'm sorry to hear your concert has been cancelled and to read the unnecessary remarks about it
My son, daughter-in-law and my grandchildren have gone to see Oasis tonight.....I would rather watch paint dry but I would never hurt their feelings by saying so. Some people just don't know when to keep it shut.

Comment by: Lobby Les on 12th July 2025 at 21:15

Pennington Flash/Park/Nature reserve, call it what you will, is in Pennington, Leigh. It is not, and never will be, in Wigan regardless of which local authority it comes under.

Comment by: DTease on 12th July 2025 at 23:15

Aww, go on Mick give one a big sloppy kiss! You’ll be fine….. honest.

Comment by: Mick on 13th July 2025 at 04:58

Thanks John I always like to help when I can.

Comment by: John (Howfen) on 13th July 2025 at 08:19

We are enjoying our break and in good company and not rising sorry Mick.

Comment by: Veronica on 13th July 2025 at 09:13

Just keep sending the photos in John…what a breath of fresh air when I opened the iPad and saw this photo. I hope others do the same. Different people and different styles of photos make all the difference. A bit like Artists and their paintings….all different.

Comment by: Mick on 13th July 2025 at 09:48

Does that mean you're going to stay in bed all day, John?

Comment by: Veronica on 13th July 2025 at 10:42

Have you noticed John he’s like a dog with a bone …not happy at all.
