Photo-a-Day (Monday, 7th July, 2025)
O'Snack - Grand Arcade

If you are fond of Olives, Crystallised Fruits, Mediterranean Sweet Treats such as Baklava and Turkish Delight or a scoop from a vast selection of Nuts, this is the place to visit.
An ambitious yet colourful new enterprise for Wigan.

It looks unhealthy rubbish to me.
Sugar and colours are not good.
We saw one of those stalls in The Golden Square in Warrington a few weeks ago and another last week in. The Blackpool area, where we went for a short break, (can't remember exactly if it was in Lytham, Cleveleys or St Anne's...memory must be on the blink! ). They seem to be becoming popular and look tempting. Unusual and interesting angle, Colin!
I hope the stall does well. I enjoy looking & buying at stalls or going into shops that sell exotic veg, tinned stuff with labels written in a foreign language. Just fascinates me....of course I make the wrong choice sometimes !
It's says on the box that George Formby stood next to, Please Help Yourself, to what I wonder.
A bit more colourful than Tripe, Pork Pies and Pigs Trotters.
I’m quite partial to stuffed olives and feta cheese.
They may look good, but not healthy I suspect. Sugar is a no no, and we all know about obesity in this modern day.
I can't see this lasting, its like pick and mix back in the day at Woolworths.
We will never be away from the dentist.
Well presented
so good to see these young men trying to be positive and bringing something a little different to Wigan
We’ve had counter displays in the Grand Arcade before with products like this one but they don’t usually last. Those edibles don’t appeal to me but I daresay some people will try them. I do eat healthy nuts such as Walnuts,Almonds and Brazils that I buy from the Supermarket in sealed packets. I don’t want anything loose or uncovered though. Each to his own/ her own.
There looks like there is some healthy stuff as well as sweet stuff.Who does not like a treat?
No more bad for you than pies, chips, sausage rolls, burgers, fast food & the like.
Everything in moderation folks !
If anyone can actually manage to obtain a dental appointment anywhere in this godforsaken country these days , I would recommend contacting the BBC immediately so that they can report the event on the six o’clock news .
I've no teeth so I won't bother.
Please look after your teeth, you'll definitely miss them when they're gone.
Are we changing from photos quality to brands of goods. Looking back on pad history it was all about photos and not about advertising products.
Just a thought.
Aye , popping up everywhere as Irene says . The confectionery equivalent to the Turkish barber maybe ?
Better than McDonald’s….olives are packed with vitamins….okay the others are packed with sugars just like any other sweets we buy…all about choice and how much we buy
what about flies. Nothings wrapped.
Nowt wrong with promoting Wigan based business, they need all the help they can get.
I don’t care what pops up on pad as long as it is interesting, varied, topical or humorous, even horses in pyjamas!
Dentist every six months at Atherton, they always send me a text message.
As Helen says, "everything in moderation". I love nuts, but only salted ones, (that's why I only buy them at Christmas or I couldn't leave them alone!). But I adore pies, pasties and sausage rolls. I've never been a sweet-tooth except for a few Sports Mixtures (also only bought at Christmas), and I don't LIVE on "junk" but, at my age, if I want a pie, or a bag of chips, or a McDonald's I'm going to have them and blow the fat and the calories! You only live once. That statue of George Formby should be singing "With my little stick of Blackpool Rock".
If they are a success they’ll probably move into the New, New Market Hall end off next year, or the year after that or the next century.
I just read that it is to be called ‘Fettlers’ supposedly harking back to Wigans past of flat caps, clogs, spittoons and music hall jokes.
Don’t know what you all think but I’ve never heard such nonsense in all my life, they should just stick with Market Gate if they can’t think of anything more original.
Mc Donald's is junk food too.
That's my opinion.
This morning I am sat it the old Wooly’s now The Coffee House and very nice it is too and not too expensive.
Prior to this I went to get my olives at O’Snack, It’s a case of now you see it now you don’t.
Its gone!!!! Must have been a pop up one week and pop down the next.
Colin you have talent for creating unusual angles as this photograph demonstrates .
Dennis Seddon photograph of The Miners last week also showed an unusual perspective , something I would never ot thought of .
Mick's contusions are also create great interest, as do all the photographers who make Wigan World what it is .
I'm sure I speak for the vast majority of Wiganworlders in saying how grateful we are to have people giving so much of their time , in many years to come the contents will be like an enormous time capsule .
We must not forget and all who work behind the scenes. Brian ,Ron and all those who give so much to the site , a BIG thank you to to you all.
Correction my comment should have read Mick's contributions . The danger of relying on predictive text . Sorry for any confusion.
Thank you Tom, any words of appreciation expressed by yourself I consider an honour. I am sure others will agree.
And yes, Brian and Ron do Sterling work in the background which is also greatly appreciated. Without them there would be no WW.
I agree with WN6. PAD should be an eclectic mix of everyday life in Wigan and District.
I would like to add Historic (of which the town has spadefuls), Entertaining, a little Educational, recollections and sometimes a bit ‘Off The Wall’ to bring a bit of a smile to people’s faces.
Goodness knows we need it.
Junk food just like mc Donald's and KFC.
Colin, with your title o'snack, I initially conjured a pie atop George's hat - again, but no and it looks very colourful. You don't have to buy it, but if you do like to imbibe then heed the given advice, and eat very salty and sugary foods in moderation, drink plenty of water and give your teeth a good scrub.
I do like the Greek Baklava that's made with honey, whilst more than likely the one here will be Turkish Baklava that's made using a sugar and lemon syrup, it's which taste you like, and if you like nuts they are in both countries variant, such as walnuts, almonds, hazlenuts and pistachios. I'm sure there will plenty of other products that I would buy too, but not those normal and especially not the multi-coloured kabanos, I don't like the taste or texture of kabanos, so they're a definite non. Though I hope the lads do well, as the stall is a lot different than is the norm in there.
There looks like there is some healthy stuff as well as sweet stuff.Who does not like a treat?
I have heard tell here in the knoll at Shevington that Mick contusions also create great interest at A&E, whenever he gone over his bike handlebars and mores the often when he's had the stale Tang Yuan dumplings thrown at him, he actually a medical 'phenomenon'

What I can't understand with this Pad thing is, I'm sure Brian said that any photo that doesn't get used with be put in a box of some sort so people can still view them.
I know that I've sent in some interesting ones that have never been shown on Pads that I'm sure a lot of you who don't get out so much would have loved to see, one recently was of a Muslim woman praying under a flowering tree at Haigh Hall another was of a big group of blackmen hanging around the Market square.
And last week, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw a big group of Muslim ladies having a barbecue picnic near the wall garden of Haigh Hall. I did send in a photo of this event, but it's probably too early to see if it appears.
These pop-up places are another way to launder money. I've seen them all over the place; they have two in Victorian Station and about three in the Arndale market in Manchester.
Anybody hungry for an Olive or a few Nuts can find them in ASDA.
Mick … my best mate … well my only mate really … just to set the bar that little bit lower .
You need to understand that an interesting photo is only interesting to anyone who is interested in it … savvy ?
So don’t start moaning to me about your photos not appearing , as you yourself comprise one of the big three on p.a.d .
Take a look at p.a.d. from the 2008/9 era and compare the quality and diversity of the shots from back then .
No comparison with what we get these days … right ?
I’ve submitted several photos myself for p.a.d that have never appeared … and so have many others , but we didn’t moan about it , we just gave up … so it’s all now falls to the cartel of three it would appear .
This site’s taken a nosedive since those days , and the only thing that we can look forward to other than dandelions growing up through cracks , are horses wearing bleedin’ trenchcoats or listed soddin’ buildings .
And I’m not blaming the foot soldiers here btw .
I’m blaming whoever is responsible for selecting whichever photos appear .
Let me say this , and I’m not brown nosing here btw , that by far the best photos that I’ve ever seen on this site weren’t yours , or any other of the favoured few for that matter … they were taken by a bloke from up Aspull way that ended up donating his camera to the Sue Ryder shop … or summat similar .
But please don’t take my comment amiss Mick .
It’s inevitable that you’re going to come in for a certain amount of stick anyway .
I just thought that it might be less painful coming from me .
Mick, most of your pictures contain people with the intention of poking fun or creating controversy, so any wonder they don’t come up.
Stop complaining and do something useful with your life.
I’m not surprised the
“ big group of black men hanging around he Market Square” and the “ Muslim Woman praying under a tree and other Muslim women having a picnic barbecue near the wall garden”. We’d all end up behind bars in today’s climate! Worse than the urinating chap down Wallgate and the intrusion in the Arcade!
Dandelions growing through cracks are one thing but those photos are something else! It’s not the Daily Express either….sometimes I can’t believe what I’m seeing with my ‘ dicky’ eyes!
You have to remember some photo topics are boring to the general public.
It's up to Brian, Ron and Admin to decide what is suitable for pad.
As Veronica rightly says, in this present climate we have to be careful what we see and say. I personally like wildlife, flowers and parks, but many don't.
Dave ogy was one of my favourite uploaders, always something different and stunning photo quality, Dave is a true professional. That not to say others are not, there's been very many outstanding photos and great comments taken over the years and thank them all.
I wasn't moaning Ozy. to me it sounds like you who is doing that.
Personally I thought the dandelion growing from the crack was very good and showed a part of Wigan some viewers have never seen.
The point I was trying to make Mick , is that there isn’t enough diversity on p.a.d. thats all .
There are only 365 days in any normal year , and most of those days feature photos from you and your two mates .
I find it difficult to believe that there’s no one else out there that’s capable of taking and submitting photos so why aren’t they appearing ?
It’s been said on a number of previous occasions but nothing ever changes , it’s just stuff from the cartel and very little else , … and it’s all well and good saying " Well , why not get out there and tek some yersel’ ? "
What’s the point if your submissions are constantly being overlooked ?….eh ?
… There isn’t one .
And that’s one of the reasons why I think many potential contributors have given up bothering and why the site is in terminal decline .
Now I’ve got top weight on today , so I’ll have to leave it at that for now and bid you good day .
Thank God for that.
