Shevington Memorial Garden

The footpath appears to be a big V for victory.

Lovely pic Mick.
That’s PROPER green that is Mick. If it was any more green it would be EXTREMELY green that would Mick. It’s greener than Green MacGreen from Hindley Green that is Mick.
A pleasant enough 'garden' but from a photographic point, its a pity the tree trunk is in the centre of the view Mick. You could have got the Victory V path from the other end with the tree in the back ground, that might have looked better.
That is a lovely photo.
The tree blocking the picture view seems to be a Tibetan Cherry tree. It also looks as if it is also blocking the path just for good measure.
A beautiful and well maintained park Mick.
But as usual I have no doubt that the detractors will be having their say, yet again!
Teasy, its a natural green and not a sickly OTT touched up green that we saw a couple of weeks ago.
Helen, the tree, is a Tibetan cherry tree, Prunus Serrula. It was chosen because of its copper-coloured bark ( probably the only one in existence in Wigan) by the children from the local school who designed the centre point of the sensory garden.
The tree trunk blocks and divides the picture it has to be said.. It could have been taken from a better angle with more emphasis on the Memorial stone and seating area. It would have been much better to take the photo from where the two trembling villagers are stood in the corner…(they look to me like they don’t want to be included in the photo). Perhaps they recognise the Lone Ranger on his bike.
The garden itself is very nice as far as Memorial gardens go.
Well done to the Parish Council on this occasion.
I like the way the photo has been taken with the tree and the flag pole standing proud over the village.
Thats very good to know its a cherry tree Mick, I expect it looked lovely in the spring....the point I was making was, that it intruded on the photo, thats all.
Thanks for the advice Helen. I'll make a point of not letting trees, even if it is the only one of it's kind in Wigan, get in the way next time.
This photo is taking me back to the 1950s when I used to come up the Shevington on holidays at my auntie Margarites.
We would come on two buses one into Wigan from Hindley Green then another one up to Shevington, I remember this area of grassland and trees belonging to Dixon of Shevington Hall, he had a big stone wall all the way around it that went down Church Lane and up Old lane then back to the village along Shevington Lane.
My Auntie lived in Broad oth Lane so we were close to the wall which we would climb over and sometimes get chased off by Dixons bloodhounds.
Other times, we would play in the long grass in farmers fields and at dusk we would sometimes go in to the graveyard and one of us would shout ghost and we all would run like buggery.
If it were a warm day, we would be down at the canal floating about in an old lorry inner tube, and sometimes having a ride on one of the coal barges.
You could have taken a photo separately of the tree or included it at a different angle. It’s a case of make your mind up which is the focal point of the photo - tree trunk or Memorial. Just my opinion without any malice intended.
Your mate Mal says it’s too green Mick.
It's not the only one of it's kind in Wigan, even though it's not in Wigan, it's in Shevington.
Ooh, yes DTease my favourite colour too. Was the garden designed by Bert Green from Old Lane, or Alf Green from Church Lane, or maybe it was Jimmy Green from Miles Lane, or then again it could have been Bob Green from Manor Road not to mention Hughie Green, but it could have been Even Stevens from Hall Green who lives next door to P Green.
It’s not a competition Mick.
There’s nobody worse than Mick for negative comments. No need to walk round him on tip toes… Remember the beautiful pink blossoms on the ‘ leggy’ tree the other day? That’s just one there’s quite a few others.
Not that my opinion matters but I think the bare trunk of the tree is missing something.
Could it be the branches and the leaves?
John Noakes on this occasion you have made me laugh ‘mi ‘ead off’!
DTease Your 'Green' comment was great, had a chuckle, thanks.
I liked the tree in the foreground because of the detail and shades in the bark - bit like a totem pole. Nice contrast to the greenery.
That tree is all ‘leggy’ and no ‘heady’ Mick.
