Always a colourful display of plants and Bouquets.
Orrell Post.

It's nice to see the ancient Orrell Post in this photo, and I bet it's the first time that many Pad viewers will have seen it.

Top marks to the photographer & the florist
I think I know where that is for once.....is it the cross roads that I knew as Orrell Post , if you went straight on there you would be heading to Abbey Lakes & Upholland ?

That's a lovely scene. It may be 2025 but it has a look of a 1950s/1960s town, such as we used to see in the Ladybird "Shopping With Mother" books. I don't know the area well, Helen, although I've passed through it, but I think you're right about where it leads to; I'm sure someone will confirm it.

A lot of people get confused with Orrell and Orrell Post

Comment by: Roy on 23rd May 2025 at 10:11

Nice pic Dennis, a place i know well.
Please excuse me for using your post to refer to another PAD, namely, Tuesday 20th May.
Thank you Cyril re your comment about the Charnley change of name.
Colin, The Charnley Arms is now an expensive Southern American Smokehouse named The Hickory's.

yes it is Orrell Post

Just a thought that today's PAD came to mind....Hill's Florist. I am sure the owner, back in the day a young man, won quite a prestigious award from Interflora or some other florist related organisation....I remember reading it years ago in a trade magazine having been a florist all my working life. Wonder if the now not so young man still owns it ?
Anyone know ?
The thoughts these PAD's bring to mind !

I can see Begonias I always buy a dozen or so as they are so colourful and last ages. Good for putting in tubs between other plants.
Nice photo Dennis I recognise the area.

Yes it's now a Green King pub and its name is Hickorys, and the Wigan customers are queuing at the door to get in, apparently none of the customers had ever heard of Professor Charnley but had heard of smoked cheap food which they like.

Comment by: Cyril on 23rd May 2025 at 15:14

Roy and Mick, when they are needing new hips and knees, I'm sure they'll be thankful to Prof. Charnley for his pioneering work in the replacement of those joints.

Will Hickory's be another nine-day wonder as Henry Africa's was, as I'm sure they'll soon get fed up with the smoked food, and then be going back to the northern menu of pie and chips.

It seems as if the same people still run the business Helen, see info in the link:

The difference between Orrell and.Orrell Post used to confuse me also. Once I realised that Orrell is a place and Orrell Post a newspaper then all became very clear.

Comment by: Mick on 23rd May 2025 at 22:11

Orrell post is a Stone Post that used to stand in the middle of the road. but it was relocated next to the Stag pub wall, so most people never notice it now.

Comment by: Dek on 23rd May 2025 at 23:34

Cyril, prof charnleys work was development rather than pioneering. As pioneering means being the first to do something new and development is progress upon the foundations laid by pioneers.

Comment by: Roy on 24th May 2025 at 10:04

Dek, Prof Charnley was the worlds FIRST surgeon to totally replace a full hip joint.
Cyril, ironically i am at present recovering from a knee replacement .

Comment by: Cyril on 24th May 2025 at 13:55

Hope you fully recover soon Roy and become pain free and mobile

Comment by: Dek on 24th May 2025 at 16:15

According to the British Orthopaedic Association - Royal College of Surgeons of England

In 1938 Sir Philip Wiles performed the first total hip replacement in the World and later became President of the British Orthopaedic Association 1955 - 1957.

Comment by: Slippery Mick on 24th May 2025 at 18:34

Dek and Roy, prof Charnley did the first total hip replacement 'to be done at Wrightington Hospital'.
His claim to fame was in selection of better material to line the joint with. Ironically, it wasn't him who selected it but his engineer assistant acting against his orders in his absence.

Thank you Cyril.
