Helmsmans Way Poolstock is a lovely place to live, my daughter lives in one of those properties.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 19th May 2025 at 09:42

Mick, one of your best.
I just love the scene and the contrasting colours, it puts me in mind of ‘The Blue Lagoon’.

Comment by: John Noakes on 19th May 2025 at 10:34

Mick, that’s a pond, not a lake.
Helmsman Way is in Worsley Mesnes. How long has Worsley Mesnes been regarded as a nice place to live?

Comment by: Pat McC on 19th May 2025 at 11:37

A beautiful calm scene - ideal for a picnic. John Noakes - I lived in one of the maisonettes in Worsley Mesnes when first married - I thought it was great having our own home, which is what most people feel about where they live.

Comment by: Colin Traynor on 19th May 2025 at 11:44

It’s comments like that John that put people off posting anything on WW. That said, it’s not Worsley Mesnes it’s Poolstock on the Westwood side of Poolstock Lane.
The pond might be a small offshoot of Scotsman’s Flash which in terms of size is a lake, industrial land at one time but now it looks very pretty and I would have thought if Mick’s photo is anything to go by, a desirable place to live.

Comment by: WN6 on 19th May 2025 at 12:38

Great photo, full of colour, pity it’s an another opportunity for Snobs raise their ugly heads.
There’s much more to Wigan than Standish, Shevington and Haigh, Mick has just proved it.

Comment by: John (Howfen) on 19th May 2025 at 12:55

I have family living in Worsley Mesnes and they are happy so less of the negative attitude please mr Noakes.

Comment by: Mick on 19th May 2025 at 13:22

Colin, I make a point of putting things on here that are wrong if it gives the clever clogs something to do to correct me. Cyril will be on later, explaining how the lake was formed and how many rats he's seen running around it when he's had a good Google.
PS Col, if you want to be a PAD policeman, have a read of the nasty, uncalled for comment from Jean on yesterday's PAD, see if you can find out who Jean really is, I think she might be a man, because I cant ever remember dumping any Jeans.

Comment by: Veronica on 19th May 2025 at 13:31

I’ve never been to Poolstock for years it’s looking very nice. The pond looks like it needs some rain.

Comment by: Keith Beckett on 19th May 2025 at 13:44

John Noakes aka Tonker on the Message boards.

Comment by: John (Howfen) on 19th May 2025 at 13:51

Good photo Mick I think I rode past that water on Sunday as we were riding down Poolstock from Wigan and turning left soon after the car wash then onto the new road before dropping down to the canal.

Comment by: Bill on 19th May 2025 at 14:13

Why does photo a day always turn into an argument when the pictures been sent in by mick.

Comment by: John Noakes on 19th May 2025 at 14:43

There’s no point at all in posting anything if the truth can’t be told. Let’s all post make-believe stories to make Wigan what it’s not.
More to the point, the make-believe stories seem to be posted by people who, in their own admittance, are not familiar with Wigan anyway?
Colin, check before you comment. Helmsman Way is in Worsley Mesnes.

“There’s much more to Wigan than Standish, Shevington and Haigh”

What a ridiculous commend.

Comment by: good old days on 19th May 2025 at 15:02

its a flash waddacars poolstock

Comment by: Dek on 19th May 2025 at 15:45

Worsley Mesnes definitely, I worked on them houses. Not much in it, and the entrance might be Poolstock side of the bridge, but WM it is. A bit further would put it in Ince though, not Poolstock.

Comment by: Veronica on 19th May 2025 at 16:11

There’s no need to be snide about Cyril’s comments - he leaves it up to who ever is interested whether they want to know more by copying and pasting info on Google or not. Anyway he’s more than usually right and his posts are interesting and fair. Plus he doesn’t brag like kids in the school playground about where he lives...

Comment by: Cyril on 19th May 2025 at 16:32

I don't do Google these days Mick, and I've not seen any rats there either, but some years ago I did see a lot of Swans, which would waddle up to the care home to eat the food that was put out for them, and the patients liked seeing them, it now looks bereft of Swans and with only five ducks, maybe the new road has frightened them away or they've been clipped with vans or trucks.

Comment by: Veronica on 19th May 2025 at 16:33

Slippery Mick before you slip off - Wigan is the main town surely. That’s where most of the history is ….don't forget - for one Bonny Prince Charlie stayed the night on his way to wherever. I don’t think he stopped in Shevvy. And it’s a Royal Borough…. And the Romans encamped in Wigan…it is or was the main town.

Comment by: Tom on 19th May 2025 at 17:04

I don't think there would be any spare beds in Shevvy in those days Veronica and if there we're I don't think Prince Charlie would have diverted of the main track

I have a great deal of respect for what Keith Beckett has to say , so I feel Inclined to believe him ( rightly or otherwise ) when he says that Noaksey is none other than Tonker )

Which presents something of a dilemma for me inasmuch as I also have a great deal of respect for Tonker’s views … he’s no dummy either .

I just wish that posters would stick to one name so that we all know where we stand , instead of posting under different synonyms such as Swein Forkbeard and the like … or failing that , then at least let folk know beforehand .

So yes , I’m quite fond of Veterano if you can find room in your suitcase next time you’re over here Noaksey .

Comment by: Cyril on 19th May 2025 at 17:57

Now, now Veronica, remember Mick was born in a stable, trouble being poor Hercules was still in there too, and having to put up with Mick yelling every time the smithy was hammering on the anvil.
Shevvy also had a saintly connection too, well M&S St Michael labels in Mick's underpants that is.

A Blue Plaque honouring Mick's endeavours for the Parish Council was being affixed to the wall of the Old Smithy Shop at Shevington yesterday, but today the owner was offering them £500 to take it back down.

Mick knows we are only having banter and craic; anyhow PaD wouldn't be the same without it. §:¬)

Comment by: DTease on 19th May 2025 at 19:34

That’s very funny Cyril.
If only we could get him to wear them underpants as outerpants we would all know who he is when he’s out patrolling on his bike.”.Heyup”they all would cry “here comes Supermick in his M&S knickers”
I’ll offer £600 for the plaque….that’s if I had £600.

Comment by: Irene Roberts on 19th May 2025 at 20:35

Ozy, I have been to visit a mutual friend of ours today and had no idea you were such a good artist.....your pictures of her cat and your dog on the wall above her fireplace were lovely! I agree with you about names.....I don't mind people using a pseudonym if they would just stick to it.

Comment by: Veronica on 19th May 2025 at 20:51

Being born in a stable gives him grandiose ideas Cyril …a bit like Trump even if it did favver Steptoe’s backyard.
Exactly Tom there wouldn’t be any beds at all full stop… just fields in the middle of nowhere. Certainly no stable for Charlie’s horse he would have had to sleep under a hedge! I’ve heard more about Shevvy ever since I joined WW..than I ever did living in Wigan. If that place was so wonderful I’d keep quiet about it just in case
travellers from other lands drop by with their tents……they’ll soon catch on. You would never hear the last of it…

Comment by: Cyril on 19th May 2025 at 21:33

No DTease, that would be too much, you can see it now
Husband: Your underwear is much too tight and very revealing.
Wife: Wear your own then.

Let us put it this way, it is close to Wigan and, therefore, of interest to many people born in Wigan and in the areas around Wigan.
Local boundaries?
Are we profoundly concerned about boundaries when we know where these places are?
By the way, like a number of contributors to Wiganworld, I am extremely familiar with Wigan and the areas around Wigan.

I have always found Cyril a very pleasant person with politeness and very interesting contributions.
A beautiful photograph with colours that van Gogh would be proud of.
Mick, please keep up the good work that many of us appreciate.
