Are We There Yet?

Are We There Yet?
Not far off now!
Aspull Health and Well-being Centre.

I hope they don’t start messing with them trees. Been living in Aspull much longer than I have them trees.

"Them trees" don't you mean "Thooz trees" ?

Comment by: PeterP on 24th October 2022 at 06:23

Hope there is ample car parking? They converted Ashton town hall into two doctors surgery and a clinic. Parking for staff and 8 disabled bays NO other parking and a school at the back of it .Chaos when kids are coming out you cannot get into a disabled bay for parents picking kids up and every one using the Doctors/Clinic have to park on the market square.

Comment by: Veronica on 24th October 2022 at 08:49

How lucky are the people of Aspull to get their own Health Centre. We in Westhoughton have to traipse to Bolton. So annoying..

Comment by: Elizabeth on 24th October 2022 at 09:10

Yes Dennis,I agree.Hope they leave the trees alone, they are beautiful and part of Aspull.

Comment by: Dennis Seddon on 24th October 2022 at 09:17

Us marra’s cawt talk posh Big Al, purrit daen to a lack of educashun owd lad.

Comment by: irene roberts on 24th October 2022 at 09:24

I too hope they leave the trees alone. I agree with PeterP re the parking. They need to supply enough parking spaces. Sadly, these days, people will use the car park, including the disabled spaces, whether they are visiting the health centre or not. And the subject of ferrying children to school and back...why can't the parents WALK their children to school and back?! I do realise there may be valid reasons why a FEW children need to be taken in a car, but in most cases they could walk and would just accept that, as we did as children. They are just growing up with the wrong expectations. Sorry, Dennis, for going off the subject but it drives me potty!

Comment by: Tom on 24th October 2022 at 10:02

The people using the health centres should walk or go by bus, maybe if they did a bit more exercise they wouldnt need to go.

Comment by: Jean on 24th October 2022 at 10:03

Come to Standish! You can only park on the medical centre car part if you're disabled or you've got a pram. As parking in Standish is limited you're stuck and yet they keep on building, it's crazy.

Comment by: Gary on 24th October 2022 at 10:54

When I hear or see the phrase "Well-Being" I become suspicious.
I hope this place actually has a doctor in it when it opens. Otherwise it may be occupied by rotund female nurses telling us to diet, or worse, non medics pushing the virtues of a kale diet and the joys of living in a wooden shack with a cess pit for company.
Dennis, I think the trees may be better protected than us.
Anyone remember Dr Cooke in the clinic, with MrsCooke in the dispensary?

Comment by: Ray on 24th October 2022 at 11:25

Irene...You asked " Why cant the parents Walk their children to school
and back ? ". On my first day at school just before my 5th birthday, my
mother took me to school, thereafter, I went on my own until I reached
16 years of age. Far too many children are Mollycoddled nowadays.

Comment by: irene robert on 24th October 2022 at 12:27

Agreed, Ray! I can understand parents' feelings re safety , (although perverts have always been with us....they just get more publicity these days!), but they could easily walk their children to school. I too went to junior school alone, and those of us from Ince who attended senior school in Hindley went on the bus to Hindley and then walked to the school, (which was a fair distance), and got there for nine o'clock, even in thick snow. Hardly anyone near us owned a car,,,,you just got on with it. Trouble is, when today's children have children of their own, they will also ferry them about everywhere because it's all they know.

Comment by: Veronica on 24th October 2022 at 12:36

Very true regarding walking to school. The first day and that was the last time Mam walked me to school. I even escaped the playground in the first week, running home and hauled back again with a jam butty in my hand. There would be droves of children walking to school then - at least you couldn’t get lost in those days.

Comment by: Helen of Troy on 24th October 2022 at 12:51

At the age of 10, I travelled to school in Ormskirk from Wigan everyday on my own...don' t ask why because its a long story !

Comment by: Cyril on 24th October 2022 at 13:08

I too agree they should have enough car parking areas, though Wigan Health Centre was built to have ample car parking but now patients are having to park in the side streets if they're lucky to find a space, this is because so many health departments and clinics began moving to there meaning that the majority of parking spaces are now taken up by the staff.

Dennis, if you later need to start up a petition to save those trees, then you can add my name to it.

Comment by: DerekB on 24th October 2022 at 14:21

You can bet that when this Health Centre opens there will not be any parking places on their car park, if you would like to shop at the nearby Co-op.

Comment by: Dennis Seddon on 24th October 2022 at 15:20

Apparently, according to the plans, there’s going to be a “Community Orchard” on the site. So, if you can’t find a parking space at least you can pick an apple while you rest your weary legs after walking there!

Comment by: Cyril on 24th October 2022 at 16:15

That's good to hear of Dennis and it will look nice in spring with the blossoms, though you know the old saying - an apple a day keeps the Doctor away. There must be plenty apples around this year as you're lucky to get to see a Doctor lately, it's either the Nurse Practitioner or the Community Pharmacist you get to see where I go at Boston House.

Comment by: Wigan Mick on 24th October 2022 at 16:34

I think some of these young mums drive kids to school and then rush off to work. families nowadays are struggling to pay mortgages

Comment by: James Hanson on 24th October 2022 at 18:04

Why do parents need to take their children to school in a car? you may ask.
Well, consider this.
In the case of a friend, who's younger of two sons was allocated a place at Rose Bridge High School, in Ince, although they live two hundred metres from Hawkley Hall High School.
At the inevitable appeal, another set of parents, who lived half a mile from Rose Bridge, were objecting to their daughter being sent to Hawkley Hall.
And you wonder why this country of ours is on the slippery slope?

Comment by: irene roberts on 24th October 2022 at 20:19

James, you and I don't always agree on p-a-d comments, but a friend of mine in Worsley Mesnes recently had to come to the Health Centre in Platt Bridge for a Covid vaccine, whilst Peter and I, who live round the corner from Platt Bridge, (in Abram). had to go to Worsley Mesnes for ours! It just doesn't make sense!

Comment by: James Hanson on 24th October 2022 at 22:24

Abram, Irene? I'm surprised. I was led to believe you'd always lived in Wigan?

Comment by: Veronica on 24th October 2022 at 22:34

When I had an accident a couple of months ago ( a cupboard door fell on my leg leaving a lump that wouldn’t go away!) I was advised to go to Preston! That was at 11 00 at night… and was asked could I get a taxi? NO I will just suffer till 7 00 in the morning and drag my leg to the doctors!

Comment by: Edna on 24th October 2022 at 22:35

Nothing makes sense today Irene. While I was on my way for my booster jab today, in Mesnes St Wigan.I got a tex on my phone to say I was eligible, and the was a phone number to ring Sherwood Drive, clinc in Pemberton to make an appointment, which is two buses away for me!!! Sorry Dennis, I also hope the tree's are saved.Nice photo.

Comment by: Cyril on 24th October 2022 at 23:00

Being given a school placement at Ince when the pupil lives at Hawkley Hall and vice versa is bureaucracy gone mad. Is the school placements whereby local pupils are given preference not in place anymore?

The council sold off for housing the land where many local secondary schools stood because the influx of pupils was then low, now they're needed in these areas. One of these schools was further up the road from where Dennis took his photo, there's an estate there now.

Comment by: Wigan Mick on 25th October 2022 at 07:00

Your lucky, when I was 4 years old ( birthday was 1st sept so I started school as a 4 year old) I had to walk 2 miles from Shevy to St Maries on Almond brook road Standish.
It was only after 2 years we got a bus service from Shevy to Standish.

Comment by: Veronica on 25th October 2022 at 07:50

I didn’t know there was a prison ( clinic) on Sherwood Drive Edna …. Just a bit of fun my friend.
Was one of the schools Whelley Sec. Mod. Cyril?

Comment by: irene roberts on 25th October 2022 at 08:57

I was just trying to speak civilly, James. I won't bother in future, There are some people with whom you just can't win.

Comment by: The Real James Hanson on 25th October 2022 at 09:53

That wasn't me, Irene, I think it was Wigan Mick trying to cause an affray, up to his Shevvy Shenanigans again. Or it could've been Mac.

Comment by: irene roberts on 25th October 2022 at 10:39

Then I apologise, James. I am aware he uses other people's names sometimes.

Comment by: The real Wigan Mick on 25th October 2022 at 12:33

Irene, it says, Or it could've been Mac, have a think about it and stop believing stuff you PAD friends tell you.

Comment by: irene roberts on 25th October 2022 at 13:50

Then if I am wrong, Mick, I will apologise. to you too. I can only say that ANYONE who uses another person's name to cause an argument is disgusting and the above comment about where I live proves that, whosoever made it.

Comment by: Veronica on 25th October 2022 at 14:18

I think Irene can think for herself who’s masquerading as other folk without anybody telling her. It’s so obvious in many instances.

Comment by: Wigan Mick on 25th October 2022 at 16:39

Irene today at 8.30 I was at Boston house have my knees checked out by the physio, then I went to the Brick bike repair shop to order two new tyres for my bike, then I popped into the Brick charity shop in Gidlow lane but didnt buy anything, then I made my way home via Standish, had Cheese on toast and a tin of Chicken and Mushroom soup for my dinner.
Watched a bit of news about our new PM, then I took the missis to her Dentist in Wigan and then a quick visit to Tesco.
So you can see Ive had a busy kind of day and no time to play silly buggers on here.
But having read and reread I must say I do agree in parts with the comments posted at 12.33 about not believing stuff you PAD friends tell you.
Give away for me is I would never mention the name M-- just like I never mention name V------ after I sent them both to Coventry for telling lies about myself.

Comment by: Veronica on 25th October 2022 at 17:37

Don’t you dare call me a liar. I have no interest in talking about you to anyone for a start. I have better things to do. You are of no interest whatsoever. Plus I haven’t accused you of being who James Hanson says either. Get your facts right and grow up.

Comment by: ticsmon on 25th October 2022 at 20:31

I agree with mick, I would expect anybody who claims to have lived in wigan all their life to know a lot more about the town than they do.
