Thanks Dennis, another good pic I ain't been up there for a long time but the area I noticed is lovely and clean.

I can't place this at all, is it in the 'old' Upholland or what I knew as HallGreen ?

Comment by: Veronica on 16th May 2021 at 07:57

I found my earliest ancestor at Up Holland circa 1600's so I am proud to look on the place as the land of some of my forefathers. The bones of Peter and his descendants must be buried somewhere in the earth. Another good photo Dennis.

Lovely photo Dennis, my niece lives Up Holland, but I haven't been this far up.It looks really nice, and clean.Lovely blue sky as well.

What a lovely photo to wake up to this morning; beautiful flowers and little traffic. Thank you Dennis.

Could do with knowing the bus route and number so Pad viewers could take on the same journey.
Congratulations to the landlord of the Victoria pub for getting his hanging baskets and window boxes full of blooming flowers so early on in the year, even when his pub as been closed down for such a long time because of Covid.

Dennis has his own version of "On the buses"

Comment by: Mick LD on 16th May 2021 at 09:28

Helen of Troy - it's actually Hall Green, not UpHolland. The road going to the left down the side of the pub is Mill Lane, leading to Ashurst Beacon and Dalton.
Mick - Arriva bus services 375,385,395 from Wigan bus station to Skem and Southport all pass this point.

Comment by: Bradshaws Girl on 16th May 2021 at 09:57

Yes Helen, it is Hall Green. If you follow the road in the direction the blue car is going it brings you to the bend in the road where the war memorial is.

Comment by: Roy on 16th May 2021 at 09:59

Yes it is Helen, the pic was taken in front of The Victoria Hotel looking back towards Roby Mill and Appley Bridge.

Comment by: Alan H on 16th May 2021 at 10:08

Helen of Troy, yes it is Hall Green.

Comment by: PeterP on 16th May 2021 at 10:32

Helen of Troy if you drive past Abbey Lakes you come to a sharp hairpin bend(where The war memorial is) go round the bend to your leftfollow the road and it brings you to the shot in PAD .

Not been in the Victoria since Harold Ashurst was the landlord.

Comment by: TommyT on 16th May 2021 at 11:19

Looks like Hall Green to me.
Good pic Dennis.

Comment by: Dennis Seddon on 16th May 2021 at 12:00

It says Upholland on the clock, so I just took it to be in Upholland.

Comment by: Mick LD on 16th May 2021 at 12:03

Dave Johnson - Harold Ashurst was landord of the Britannia, just around the corner, opposite the library.
He died about 25 years ago.

Comment by: Karen on 16th May 2021 at 12:53

Harold Ashurst had the brittania not the Vic.
He was a family friend. My mum and dad went in the pub.

Comment by: Helen of Troy on 16th May 2021 at 13:02

Thanks everybody, I know exactly where it is now, I remember the turning off to Ashurst Beacon & a bakers shop just as to came into the area shown...made really good old fashioned vanilla slices....and also remember walking home to Holland Moor from the Lyric Cinema via the steps across the field. It hasnt really changed that much over the years.....there was never a roundabout though !

Comment by: Johna on 16th May 2021 at 14:12

Hall green, Upholland.

Comment by: PeterP on 16th May 2021 at 18:31

Helen it is a double roundabout and also the hairpin bend at the war memorial as a roundabout

If it's the one that goes from Wigan to Southport Mick, and you're thinking of catching it, then my advice would be, take something to read while it trundles seemingly endlessly up and down every other road in Skem....Oh!, and don't expect to be back home for News at Ten either. Not unless you get the train back from Meols that is....There isn't a barrier there you know....( wink wink ).

Sorry I got mixed up with my pubs but it is nearly fifty years ago.
