Nice photo. Makes me think of walks in Spring.

A beautiful scene. Spring is in the air, not much longer to wait...

Comment by: Mick on 10th February 2021 at 10:25

Today is a lovely day for a walk Irene, no need to wait till spring.

I agree, Mick. We had a walk down the canal near Dover Lock yesterday. It was surprisingly quite warm when we were in the sun.

Nice photo & weather to look foward too. No signs of spring here in Nth Norfolk, we have sunshine today but also have 4" of snow on the ground....Hey Ho !

Irene I bet you felt better after having a brisk walk.
Next time you are up there have a look at the Dover Lock pub sign, its got a dutch barge on it which is the Anjodi that Rick Stein used on one of his french cooking adventures

This is lovley weather for walking, even though its freezing, I love the canal walks, we spent lots of time, along the canal. So this photo evokes, lots of memories. Thank you Dave.

Mick - a very odd choice for the pub, given there were plenty of images of genuine L&L barges to be found.
I used to hate coming across hotel barges like the Anjodi when on the French canals - lumberingly slow anyway, their giving their guests the treat of 'helping' them through the locks meant you'd be stuck behind them for hours longer than the working boats, who got through locks as fast as they could.

Posted with a degree . of respect,..and if anyone may be remotely interested in my own personal views regarding the VNF, I have this statement to make..and here it is.....
.....In my own experience, the majority of French canals, ( the most interesting ones anyway, i.e. the ones largely south of Paris ) exist nowadays primarily to cater for the leisure industry, whereas the commercial canals,........ ( mostly, although not exclusively up north ) exist primarily for commerce. .

.see the connection there?...commerce / commercial?..

O.K,....moving on a tad...and I do realise that this advice may be perceived as being unsolicited, but here it is nonetheless

,..If one should find oneself hindered by a slow moving vessel on the French canal network...just moor up,.. It's that simple really
Its not quantum physics is it ?...come on....there's loads of other stuff to do.
And furthermore, I don't consider it possible to savour the delights any country at 60mph.... France in particular.

Trust me,...please...

Please trust me...I've spent half a lifetime travelling this country at breakneck speed seeing virtually buggerall of interest...so I've adopted the strategy of chill out and notch down a couple of cogs . Life's for living is it not?.. Maybe I got that wrong.
Buggered if I know...I lost the thread way back...so...
Answers on a postcard please.

Oh Rev, I wouldn't have a man with your job had any hate in his body.

I think the brewery must have told the signwriter, paint us a sign with a canal barge on it, and Anjodi was the first one to come up on Google

I agree there Ozy - the countryside of France is utterly beautiful, very much to savour there. That is unless you are in a hurry to get home and catch the ferry...but as you say life is for living on holiday - slow down and take it all in with a bottle of good French wine .and some lovely creamy cheese..... Ah bliss !

Some folk have jobs to get back to.
I always feel sorry for the people who have saved up all year to hire a boat for a few weeks, then get stuck on the Wigan flight because of vandalism done by the locals.
They know that if they dont get back to the boat hire place they will face a heavy fine.

makes me think of throwing a stone in

I'd rather throw Mick in, John! The shock of the cold water may help snap him out of continuously making such dozy comments!
