What are they shooting at? there are no targets. I did competitive archery for years but only use a compound bow.
These guys look like they are using long bows, not as easy as it looks

Comment by: Dennis Seddon on 27th August 2020 at 00:09

Actually, they are The Bolton Longbow Archers, but based at Aspull Rugby Union Club.

Comment by: derek platt on 27th August 2020 at 00:23

So where are the targets, or is it anyone walking by at the time.

Comment by: Walt ( North Yorkshire) on 27th August 2020 at 05:39

Dennis, what's the story ? That's a Yorkshire flag, unfinished business from the War of the Rose's . Like the photo it's different.

Comment by: Freddie Bowen-Harrow on 27th August 2020 at 07:57

Where’s the target?

Comment by: Mick on 27th August 2020 at 08:27

Are they shooting at the birds in the trees

Comment by: Dennis Seddon on 27th August 2020 at 09:04

Walt, the target is usually any wretched Yorkshire mon who’s strayed over the m62. They’re easily recognized in the local pubs because they never put their hond in their pocket and they keep droning on about Cricket.
It’s all fair and above board though ‘cos they give him twenty yards start before they open fire. It looks like this lucky beggar made it to the woods.

Comment by: Philip G. on 27th August 2020 at 09:12

The arrow seen against the tree might also have been carrying a message?

Comment by: Arthur on 27th August 2020 at 09:25

Freddie I thought that, looks like in the air according to the middle chap.

Comment by: Alan on 27th August 2020 at 09:28

The target must be birds.

Comment by: Dennis Seddon on 27th August 2020 at 10:22

This illusion is caused by x10 zoom. I was at the bottom of the Rugby Field and the Archers are at the top end. From where they are standing the ground slopes down to the trees which seem to be closer than they actually are because the zoom fore shortens the distance.
The target can't be seen because of the slope.

Comment by: Veronica on 27th August 2020 at 10:40

God help anybody walking behind the trees...

These lads must be from the Agincourt school . Aim high and woe betide anyone under the steel rain . Et deux doigts au toi , Monsieur .

Comment by: Walt(Nth Yorkshire) on 27th August 2020 at 16:21

Dennis, Yorkies believe that one day a gang of lads walking on't Pennines came across a sign that said LANCASHIRE, those that could read turned back those that couldn't carried on and settled over there.

Comment by: Walt(Nth Yorkshire) on 27th August 2020 at 16:26

Irene and Veronica, it goes Tra lah lah lah lah lah laaaah - tral lah lal lah laaahhh lah, I've seen the Big Yin do it on TV.

Comment by: irene roberts on 27th August 2020 at 18:19

To be honest, I've never really listened to The Archers, Dennis, although I love British traditions, but I know the theme tune and I HAVE heard of Walter Gabriel. Veronica, I'll name that tune in one!
