This photo will have a lot of Wiganers who dont look out of the bus window on the way to Chorley market wondering where is Langtree.

So thoughtful of the Victorians to have place markers along the main roads, especially useful for the coach drivers. Not to mention the travellers who walked from town to town no doubt.

It's Standish-with-Langtree.

Another piece of craftmanship.

Just by here was Langtree Bar, not a pub to give succour to a weary traveller alas but a barrier to halt coaches and collect tolls.

As a" Standisher"I have always known it as Standish with Langtree. A few years ago I bought a book "About Standish" by M.D.Smith and it details how Langtree became tied in with Standish by the marriages of 2 families in the 12th century. Langtree being a separate "township" to Standish. There was another of these milestones on Preston Road giving 4 miles to Wigan & 13 miles to Preston. This is indicated in another publication on Standish by S.Aspinall in 1981. Is it still there I wonder. This is what I like about Wigan World, little nuggets of information that are shown in the album & P-A-D.

Yes it is still there Barrie, probably Poet has beaten me to the answer, lol, but nevertheless !! Irene, you are correct,I have lived in Standish for 78 years but never used its so called '' full title''. Standish also comprises of several other townships, about 10 I think, including the likes of....Duxbury, Shevington, Worthington, Coppull, Charnock Richard and more.

You're right Barrie, Standish With Langtree UDC to give it its correct title.

Roy, I worked in Standish as a girl, aged 18 to almost 21, at Richardson's Chemists, although I lived in Ince. This was in 1970-1973. I always loved the name Standish-with-Langtree and was sad that it was never given its full title. I always thought it was a lovely place and I still do.

Unfortunately Irene it has changed over the years, the traffic now is horrendous as it is in a lot of places. The crossroads in the centre and J27 M6 don't help at all, the 'planned' by-pass should have been built.

Comment by: Alan on 20th January 2020 at 21:26

Standish is the elite of Wigan.

Comment by: Mick on 20th January 2020 at 23:08

I went to Standish today for a haircut and had no problems with the traffic

Somebody has stolen one of the mile markers from the Boars Head bridge.
