A lot cleaner than the old station. By the late 60s it was badly run down.

They should write under that 'Please excuse the state the town's in, we didn't have time to tidy up'

Brilliant photo. For my sins I now live in St Helens and I love coming to Wigan on the train and seeing this sign from the top of the steps.

Comment by: PeterP on 22nd April 2018 at 09:25

Unless the station as improved in looks the sign is apt pointing to the toilets.

A bit boring this sign!
Underneath should be written
"Home of the meat pie"
This would really make the thousands of visitors each year feel welcome!

"Wom tut myet un perata pie " .
What would visitors make of that Johnny?

One man's meat ..., but surely white lettering on a maroon background would have been the choice of most rail users.
I wouldn't be surprised if someone at HQ had said "I know, sir, let's try black lettering on a white background, for a change."
The plain white panel seems to add chill to the ... welcome sign, above.

I think "Hello and Welcome to Wigan" would have added a bit of friendliness and warmth, more in keeping with Wigan people. But at least we've been spared "Hi" or "Have a Nice Day", thank heaven!

What a soulless place. Looks like that rail staff jobsworth is keeping his beady eye on you as if taking photos is a criminal act (well the way our world is going it soon will be). And it won't be long til they'll be rolling out those cattle herding style turnstile barriers here like every other station, so called to stop fare dodgers (what's wrong with having ticket inspectors doing their job?), so all that rail travel romanticism like you see in those old films where you see your loved one on the train before it departs will be a thing of the past, and instead we'll be made to suffer with ticket barriers, or worse to come, it'll be biometric scanners where it reads your fingerprints.

Then there's the CCTV. Its strange that the govt dosent have money to help the homeless, help people in property, etc, yet have money when it comes to the Orwellian agenda. I wouldn't use the toilets here as they have CCTV in them, well the last time I went in there.
