I could listen all day to that band when it's in the town centre. It's time it came again surely to the market place! (that's if it is the Wigan Band).

Mick there is no difference. Some brass instruments have a silver plate finish but they are the same instruments. The term "Silver band" tended to be used more in the South. there is also the term "Silver Prize band" which some bands used after winning Silver Prizes - presumably cups, but this has nothing to do with cups.

Silver is sometimes used to denote a different kind of instrument. Alto and tenor saxophones for instance are brass, while descants are usually silver.
