I believe Grotesques with their closed mouths are more artistic ornamentation. Gargoyles on the other hand with their open mouths were devised as water spouts - the fiercer the better to ward off evil spirits in medieval times.

The 'nowty' face doesn't appear to have an effect on warding the pigeons off! Forgot to say what a good picture it is!

Don't sup it all Gazza, I'll be round in a bit. I'm just soaking me feet and clipping me toenails. I've got a bit of Brie and half a packet of Ritz crackers left over from Christmas, shall I bring them with me ?
