beryl I think they are ventilation shafts for the Railway tunnel
A bit more information on the Pepperpots as well Neil ! I hadn't a clue as to what they were. Getting on with "A Footplateman Remembers" those lads didn't half have some fun!

Yes Ellen, they ventilated the tunnel you can see if you look over the bridge next to where the old Sandbrook Arms pub used to be just down from Upholland College
