Interesting, is the whole train dedicated to mail??

Comment by: Dave (Oy) on 16th April 2015 at 08:39

Yes Ken - the whole train is Royal Mail. BR Class 325 is dedicated to Royal Mail Parcels Service.

I expect it is a million years away from the iconic GPO film "Night Mail". Always fascinated me as a child how the bags were swept on board from the rail side arms.

I have a dvd of "Night Mail", mentioned by Anne; it is fascinating!

'Night Mail' - I think it was by W H Auden narrated by John Betjeman.

It was a train like this that Ronnie Biggs was very interested in!

Nothing like it Giovanna. The "Great Train Robbery" was on a Class 40 Diesel (40126) pulling mail carriages. This is a modern (1995 onwards) Electric multiple unit.

Mama mia!
I meant its purpose not its physical appearance! I remember the robbery in 1963...front page news at the time! Took place at a railway bridge in Bucks.

Giovanni nothing like it...these are not slam doors like the mail carriages in 1963. If robbers tried it today they'ed be in for a very big shock. Overhead power cables.

The Great Central Railway has a preserved set of the old mail carriages and the mail pouch exchange equipment. They do demos from time to time -look on YouTube.
