Haven't been to Wigan for years. Looks like no cars allowed in Market Place. It seems the Council is ruining the town I knew and loved!

very smart! and sunshine too!

Comment by: Scholes Malc on 17th October 2014 at 09:31

that gun should be pointing the other way towards Last Orders, Lime Bar & Harrys Bar

Comment by: Allb on 17th October 2014 at 11:28

The military religion!. Why is this war nonsense still going on?, why are we so proud of war?, war is nothing to be proud of. The real "heroes" of war are the ones that say NO, and they're not cowards as most people would brand them. If people didn't fight in wars then we would have no wars. Most of us havn't a clue what wars are really about or who is really behind them. The banking system plays a massive part in them as wars are funded and manipulated by the financial industry, but you will never hear that in the mainstream media.

On a lighter note, yes that gun should be pointing towards said drinking places.

The finest company in the world ,is to be in the company of soldiers.A drink with your mates.

Comment by: Syd on 17th October 2014 at 12:54

Allb, your comments are offensive and lack empathy. You are correct that there is nothing about war to be proud of. However, the reality is that millions of servicemen died for you to have the privilege to make such a post. PLEASE show some respect,...that is the very least you can do!!!!!!!!

Comment by: David O on 17th October 2014 at 14:49

I believe the traffic free Market Place is far from ruining the Town. It has improved the experience.

Comment by: Aubrey on 17th October 2014 at 15:46

Allb,
Thank goodness your thoughts are in the minority. We have a lot to thank the war heroes for irrespective of the rights and wrongs of war

Comment by: amedar on 17th October 2014 at 16:05

Allb
I agree completely with your sentiments.
I am sick and tired of this foreign war, after war, after war in order to the benefit the oil and the arms industries multinational financiers' who in spite of their jingoism and crocodile tears couldn't care less who or where the casualties are.
It's a crime to be spending the billions each and every day on warmongering when humanity needs so much investment to alleviate the mass poverty brought on by the warmongers of the world. All the bullets and bombs on earth will do nothing to halt the the outbreak of the Ebola crisis, and that's where the billions should be going.

Allb, Forgive me , but your comments are so so wrong. The hope , which you describe , a wish for us all, was born about and fought for, as Syd and Aubrey so rightfully point out, by the men and women who gave their lives for it. I will always be eternally gratefull to those who gave their lives for me.

I shouldn't get knocked down then when I wander out of HARRYS BAR that Scholes Malc wants to blast after a Bellini or ten!

Love your comment Kath- Bring on sunshine always lol

Comment by: Allb on 17th October 2014 at 20:45

Thank you, Amedar, I agree with you there. And NO, I am not being disrectful in any way, and none of my comments where of that nature. It's about time we expose the awful murder of innocent civilians, as well as soldiers, that's going on in places like Iraq and Afganistan. Most of our money is spent on wars. Most of us couldn't care less about the families and children killed there through drone attacks and pepper bombing of homes and the horrendous treatment and torture some have undergone because they happen to live there and were caught up in the conflict.

Comment by: Aubrey on 17th October 2014 at 21:25

Tom,
I should have mentioned earlier that the photo is very good. Well done

Amedar, I agree with many of the things you say but the simple facts are these war mongering multi nationals are providing wealth and jobs to our country. War is a huge business. Of course they don,t care, it,s only money that counts. When the Saudi royals come to this land we literally bow to them because they buy our aircraft, yes , aircraft that kills. Saudi Arabia, has appalling human rights record yet we trade happily with them. India, has appalling poverty yet recently it sent rockets to Mars. I know this is the wrong forum . If you remove everyone else from our planet but left only the Sunni and Shia they would still be killing each other, same with the Israelis and Palestines. If we humans found other planets to live on we would still be fighting with ourselves. Not wishing to be too cosmic but if we truly believe in human kind our country, our space in the Cosmos would simply be called Earth, no borders, no religion, just us... If a giant meteor hit planet Earth we will all die together, there would be no borders. I know guys wrong forum, but , trigger a spark ..

Well taken (as usual) Tom.
I've been looking through your Sutchy website, really interesting. Thank you for taking the time to record these great photos of a bygone era.

Only just seen this picture and comments and i would just like to say to Allb that i am deeply offended by your narrow minded comment. I am comming to the end of a 24 year military career and what i have done for this nation in that time is something that i am very proud of. Foot and Mouth 01, Fire strikes 03, Floods in Workington 09, Olympics 12 and even on the day you wrote your comment we was preparing for an Ambulance strike just to name a few and not one mention of any conflict. If i was to mention conflicts, Keeping peace in Northern Ireland 94, 97-99 & 01, protecting remote villages from the barbaric ethinc cleansing (peace keeping), Bosnia 96, Iraq 03 & 10 and finally Afghan 10, 12 & 13. That is just me, others have done much more than me and sacraficed much more, i am still here, i still have all my limbs and i dont have any signs of PTSD.....yet! So the 'military religion' as you refer to is not about war it is about protecting our people and protecting those less fortunate from evil regimes. So taking out your frustrations on the hard working, proud, BRAVE men and women in the photo (which is an outstanding photo by the way) is unfare. Why do we do it? so you dont have to! Take you disaproval to the ballot box, not to us.

On a lighter note, The Lancashire Artillery Volunteers Band first raised in 1859, Great photo, cheers.
