Very nice John, seeing this reminded me I haven't been to Haigh Hall for over 20 years, I must make the effort and walk up this summer.

Very nice picture sadly all the Rhododendrons have to be cleared out of the plantations because of a disease.

Lancashire? Colin.

Garry, to most people Wigan will always be in Lancashire, Greater Manchester never really caught on. So if Wigan isn't in Lancashire where is it?

Comment by: Michael on 19th June 2013 at 11:29

1. Wigan is in Lancashire. It always has been and always will be. "Greater Manchester" is a nasty idea dreamed up by Ted Heath and Peter Walker in 1974.

2. "Haigh Country Park" is a nasty name dreamed up by the late Gil Swift, Director of "Leisure" in the seventies. It's the PLANTATIONS, for heaven's sake!

Garry, the Lancashire county boundaries were in place by 1100AD and no legislation has ever been introduced to alter them.
Greater Manchester and Merseyside county councils were abolished in 1986!

Michael, thankyou for that.It was always the plantations when I was there and haigh hall was in the plantations! Why do people have to rename so many places ?

Those last comments about Lancashire and the Plantations from Michael and Brian B, really cheer me up - I've been away from Wigan for 46 years - it's so re-assuring to know my concept of where and what Wigan is remains the same.
