What a great picture! It's heartening to look at this, when we have still 6 inches of partially thawed, then re-frozen snow on the ground! (-until I remind myself that our winter is far from over; we often have an April snowstorm to contend with!)

I saw these very crocuses the other day and it gladdened my heart to see them!

Comment by: david on 8th March 2013 at 10:24

Nice picture. Tom, a book which is good on techniques is 'Learning to see Creatively' - Byan Peterson. I got mine on ebay - quite cheap.

Comment by: Scholes Malc on 8th March 2013 at 10:27

the street in the background with the phoney front doors - what is the building used for?

Comment by: Colin Harlow on 8th March 2013 at 10:29

Burtspieeater: have you been sleep-walking over the years....

Dave, do you remember the proposed sculpture to be put on this plot of land adjacent to Northway?
Extract from Communicate, General, Sculptures dated 22nd Nov.2007:-
"Everyone seen this?;
A controversial work of art has been scrapped before it has started – following strong public opposition.
The "Big Blue House" was chosen as the designated piece of art for land on the edge of Wigan town centre. But when news of the winning sculpture was announced, local residents and businessmen launched a huge campaign against it.Students at Slade College were approached for designs to spruce up the area of land at the end Upper Dicconson Street/ Northway but the final plan angered residents and local councillors who said it would be a magnet for vandals and drug addicts. Following public consultation the council have decided not to go ahead with the scheme after all."
It`s a great pity that `The Face`in the Wiend didn`t get scrapped at the proposal stage too.
Nice to see you are back to glorious colour,Dave and very well done.

Colin, just my warped sense of humour!
If you look at the date Qy says he took the photo you might understand

Comment by: Roy on 8th March 2013 at 13:49

Dens, The plural of Crocus is Crocuses or can be Croci. Nice shot Dave.

Spring has definitely sprung in this lovely photo. It's has a real feel good factor seeing the colourful crocuses. I hope the cold spell forecast for next week doesn't kill them all off.

Comment by: alan lad on 8th March 2013 at 20:48

gives one the feelgood factor

Earnest, I organised a petition against" The Blue House". After an article in The Evening Post , I got help from across the Borough, including , Clive Moss Marian Pennington and Bill Edwards R.I.P. I can't remember how many signatures we archived , but I like to think that it played some part in the scheme being discontinued . Had it gone ahead It would have brought ridicule to the Town .
Geoffrey Shryhane of Wigan Observer Fame , should be credited with starting the revolt against the totally inappropriate structure . I for one only learned about the plan after reading his column , and acted after his urging ,to oppose the monstrosity . I'm sorry I disagree with your opinion on 'The Face' , after initial misgivings, I have now come to quite like the design.

Comment by: Ernest Pyke on 8th March 2013 at 22:06

Thanks for the info Tom. I didn`t know that Geoff was involved.
The wicker bird I took on P-a-D 31st Aug.2012 is still next to `The Face`.

Comment by: John Morris on 8th March 2013 at 22:12

I noticed these crocuses last week when I was in Wigan on a short visit. I love spring flowers. Lovely photo Oy.

Comment by: Al.C. on 9th March 2013 at 10:28

The building in the background was town houses originally, Gunns had it till about 20 years ago, it was a short lived Antique Centre in the late 90s early 2000s.
