I know the pub of this name in Hindley but was not aware there was one there.

Comment by: Lizzie down under on 3rd December 2012 at 00:20

This must be the Gidlow Lane tour, I'm impressed!!!! Cheers!!!

Comment by: Alan (Van Isle) on 3rd December 2012 at 03:31

I remember going into a Bird I'th Hand pub, but I don't remember it being in Gidlow Lane.
?? Altzeimers ??

Comment by: Janice on 3rd December 2012 at 04:20

Am I right in thinking this was nicknamed t'hen house?

Comment by: Thomas(Tom)Walsh . on 3rd December 2012 at 08:39

Janice, the colloquial name is t'hen hole .
Alan, there are at least two other Bird I'th Hands in and around Wigan one in Hindley,
another at Gathurst, there may be others, so maybe you visited one these .

Comment by: Ernest Pyke on 3rd December 2012 at 08:54

Janice, I`m not a pub person but I believe it was called T`Henhole.
Did you go to Trencherfield yesterday?

Comment by: Pete rammy on 3rd December 2012 at 08:55

Janice,it was known as t'hen hole.

Comment by: Mick on 3rd December 2012 at 08:55

Alan Van Isle, the Bird I'th Hand pub you remember might have been the one in Gathurst road next to John Rigby college.

Comment by: Helen on 3rd December 2012 at 09:40

Another great, red brick building. I expect the sign is made up with ceramic tiles.

Looks a nice pub.

Comment by: pete rammy on 3rd December 2012 at 09:45

the bird i'th hand at gathurst has been converted to a private house, another pub gone!

Comment by: Cyril. on 3rd December 2012 at 10:45

No wonder it was called T'hen hole if there were six folk in back room it was packed.

There was also a Bird i'th Hand on Ormskirk Road, Robin, it's now a materials warehouse.

Comment by: piccyme on 3rd December 2012 at 11:00

i used to live near the one in Hindley, many moons ago

Comment by: Loz on 3rd December 2012 at 11:19

Get it right - it's th'en 'ole! The h is silent on hen and hole! It's a lovely pub on the outside, I like the banded sandstone around the windows. Long time since I've been inside though. (I mean the pub, not jail).

Comment by: tony on 3rd December 2012 at 12:08

i'm sure that there was a bird i'th hand pub near ince station on ince green lane it's now a shop.

Comment by: marrer on 3rd December 2012 at 14:03

Called to get a pint before the first game of the season. Wigan v Huddersfield 5 th feb 2012Sunday afternoon it was closed down.

Comment by: Janice on 3rd December 2012 at 15:36

Thanks for the info. I recall my late partner speaking about this pub but did not remember it correctly. What was on at Trencherfield then Ernest? As I live outside of wigan I tend not to get to know about events.

Comment by: Ken R on 3rd December 2012 at 16:21

I have been under the impression that P-O-D would be a recent photo. This one of this pub must be somewhat older, what date would this be?

Comment by: Cyril. on 3rd December 2012 at 16:26

Your right Tony, there is a photo of it in Places from 2007, copy and paste the link below into your browser bar, or type Bird i'th Hand Ince in the google search box at the top of the page.

Comment by: Peter Schofield on 3rd December 2012 at 17:01

Cyril Yes you are right there was a Bird i'th Hand Pub at number 9 Ormskirk Road Newtown and my grandfather Robert Schofield was the landlord for a number of years until he sadly passed away on the 31st March 1959. I remember it well and yes it eventually became the curtain warehouse. It is still standing along with a few other shops right in the middle of that great big roundabout at the front of ASDA.

Comment by: Lizzie down under on 3rd December 2012 at 18:59

The Bird i'th Hand at Gathurst at one time was run by friends of my parents, I think their names were Jim and Peggy but I can't remember their surname. They had a bowling green out the back. Cheers!!!

Comment by: Mick on 3rd December 2012 at 20:18

Ken R The photos was taken 2 weeks ago and sent into Brian the same week.

It could have been on POD earlier but I think it was in a queue.

Comment by: David Fairclough on 3rd December 2012 at 21:01

I read it was to reopen as a renovated pub with flats up stairs. Has this happened?

Comment by: Ernest Pyke on 3rd December 2012 at 22:09

Janice, It was open day with boat trips on `Kittywake` etc. I left messages for you on P-a-D`s 18th Nov.2012 and 1st Dec.2012.

Comment by: Mick on 3rd December 2012 at 23:13

David Fairclough it reopened a couple of weeks ago.

Nice address Flat 3 T'hen hole Gidlow lane Wigan

Comment by: Ernest Pyke on 4th December 2012 at 04:55

Ken Roocroft (just come across P-a-D 1st Oct.2010), Mick told me on 26th Nov.`12 at 05:53 that he was in Gidlow Lane two weeks ago - on P-a-D 22nd Nov.`12. Your`s was 1st comment once again !! on P-a-D 27th Nov.`12 and my comment at 04:40 asked Mick if it was taken then.
Lizzie down under`s comment at 00:20 above shows that she reads comments and remembers them !!

Comment by: ann21 on 4th December 2012 at 13:13

Mick Be towd. It's th'en 'ole. There are no aitches anywhere.

Comment by: Cyril. on 4th December 2012 at 14:49

Hello Peter, ordering a drink in the tap room there was like being a child in a sweet shop as it supposedly had the tallest bar in the country, I'm almost six foot and the bar counter came up to my neck - so no resting your elbows on the bar there.

Comment by: ann21 on 4th December 2012 at 16:29

Can anyone throw any light on why it was called th'en 'ole (the hen hole)

Comment by: Pollyolly on 4th December 2012 at 20:31

I lived in Delph Street and remember my Dad taking a jug to be filled at the "Then Hole" with beer to drink at home.

Comment by: Lizzie down under on 4th December 2012 at 23:27

Thanks Ernest, I will take that as a complement!!! May be we can have a tour of Pepper Lane??? in the not so distant future, no pressure folks!!! Cheers!!

Comment by: Ken R on 4th December 2012 at 23:47

I looked up this pub on Google and it shows the main pub front but no extension to the left, but signs that there had been an extension in the past. That area had been used as a car park and beer garden, so this does not make sense........

Comment by: Keith Guest on 5th December 2012 at 13:39

Ken R originally there was a row of houses from where the extension starts to the workhouse gates.

Wish I'd a penny for every pint I supped in there.

Comment by: Ernest Pyke on 5th December 2012 at 19:18

Keith Guest, they were the rear entrance gates to the workhouse - the front entrance was on Frog Lane.
