Leaning on a tree trunk,
Maybe you think I look a tramp,
Or you may think I'm hanging 'round to steal a car.
But no, I'm not a crook,
And if you think that's what I look,
I'll tell you why I'm here
And what my motives are.

I'm leaning on a tree trunk at the corner of the mall,
In case a certain little gal comes by
Oh me, oh my,
I hope the little lady comes by.
I don't know if she'll get away,
She doesn't always get away,
But anyway I know that she'll try.
Oh me, oh my,
I hope the little gal comes by.

There's no other girl I could wait for,
But this one I'd break any date for,
She'd never leave me flat,
She's not a girl like that,
She's absolutely wonderful
And marvelous and beautiful,
And anyone can understand why
I'm leaning on a tree trunk at the corner of the mall,
In case a certain little gal comes by.

There's no other girl I could wait for,
But this one I'd break any date for,
She'd never leave me flat,
She's not a girl like that,
She's absolutely wonderful
And marvelous and beautiful,
And anyone can understand why
I'm leaning on a tree trunk at the corner of the mall,
In case a certain little gal comes by.

Nicely captured Thomas.

Thought it was a lamppost he was lent on. (Gas light)
Like the pick though.

The majority that nitpick at photos on here do not even live in Wigan or the UK, in fact they aren't even Wiganers anymore; having chosen to live in some far distant lands, so either put up or shut up and leave us true Wiganers to admire the photos of out town!

Ignore the negative comments Thomas, it is a wonderful photo of a tribute to a great true Wiganer. Thanks George for all the pleasure you have given folks over the years.

Cyril. Where did you get those lyrics from?.

Comment by: Cyril. on 24th April 2011 at 00:16

Ron, I have just replaced lamp post to tree trunk (as in the photo background) and put mall (Grand Arcade) instead of street and gal instead of lady. The George Formby Society reproduce the song lyrics and the music chords in their magazine The Vellum, they are also on the internet.

Cyril
For Heaven's sake..what a sweeping statement...
I live in another country but I am a Wiganer first and foremost... a true one at that.. Born and bred in Wigan Lancs not Greater Manchester..and I do not disrespect the photos either.
Now let me see.. didn't George Formby work in U.S.A for a while.. and did he not live in a house called Beryldene in LYTHAM ST ANNES ????
Maybe you think he is not a true Wiganer as well !!!!!

Actually, John ,in October last, when I nearly walked into it, it took me a few seconds to realise it was George.... maybe it was done from a photo of a young George Formby. Unfortunately I am not old enough to remember that!!!! Still good to see a pic of it on here though .

Where ever I am in the world is of no relevance. It is still a load of crap. Looks nothing like him. This site is for ex-Pats as well as locals.

Don't think a fish-eye was used. looks like convex mirror behind his head!

Comment by: Andyj on 3rd November 2011 at 11:00

I wonder what Mr. Formby would think after all this sniping? Yes, its not a perfect photo copy of him but it was made with the best of intentions.

Sadly, BBC iplayer is not open for international viewing. Suggest you use a British proxy to alter your IP# to a British one.

Frank Skinner has made a video all about him.

If all humans were destroyed and these types of statues left standing. Some visiting species will think we were all black.
