I wish people like Daniel would stop criticizing the lads who take the Photo-a-Day photographs, they may not appeal to all, but lets keep rude comments to ourselves.

Dan, where is this crossing or more to the point, where's Porters Wood? Lovely shot.

John this crossing is inbetwween Gathurst and Martland Mill near to Heinz

@ John - Porters Wood is just behind the Heinz factory in Kitt Green / Martland Park area and at one end this crossing crosses over the Southport - Manchester line just after leaving Gathurst station heading towards Wigan. The woods are also accessible from behind John Rigby college

In answer to where ' Porters Wood ' is , using 'Google Earth ' ( because I didn't know either ) it is directly behind the Heinz factory at Kitt Green in the direction of Gathurst station

Brilliant memories of my childhood. I once fell top to bottom of the embankment here, after tripping over a bramble !!!

Thanks for the memory.

I used to go to Porters wood as a lad. It's nearer to Gathurst than Heinz. Kings wood used to be behind Heinz. Local folklore has it that George Formby was born there. The wood was built over by the Observer printing works.

Daniel - see my comment 30th October.
I spent many many hours in and around this very spot in the 1950's.
Great pic, keep 'em coming.
I'd love to know who these others are who spent time here. I used to live at Kitt Green.
