Wasn't there an engineering works in Boundary St by the name of Dougal or Douglas Engineering? It was opposite Twiss Transport Cafe.
The 1925 Ince Directory (See "Stuff" on this site) gives the following as the occupants of what became Heaton's Bakery:
Leedham & Heaton Ltd., spade mfrs.
Atlas Forge, Wigan; tel. 208; grams.
Atlas Forge, Wigan.
Norman Bros., dolly tub mfcts.; tel. 784
The building was Dougal Engineering Co. I worked there from 1959 until 1963 as an apprentice welder. The name was an amalgamation of the two owners names, Douglas and Albert, can't remember their surnames.
Who can remember the 'Coopers' opposite the forge accessed by a little bridge over the brook?
Roy, you'll remember Eric Postlethwaite then. We used to deal with him when we wanted summat doing?
Thanks to Allan's excellent pics, and with his kind permission, I've filled three pages of our February Parish Magazine with his pics and their story.
